Covers: (click for super HQ!) *credit: Comic Book Resources Solicitations for issue #23 are out. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #23 Drew Z. Greenberg (W), Georges Jeanty (P/Cover), Andy Owens (I), Michelle Madsen (C), and Jo Chen (Cover) On sale Mar 4 FC, 40 pages $2.99 Ongoing It's Buffy--and Andrew--on a mission in Italy . . . together! Awkward? Yes!
Since Harmony's television stunt, the ensuing of general vampire-love from the masses, and the destruction of the Scotland base, operations at Slayer headquarters have been somewhat strained. Rogue Slayers--Simone and her gang--have not been helping Slayer-civilian relations with their attacks against the military, bank robbing, and occasional snitching at Hot Topic. Now, Andrew has a lead on how to gain intel on Simone's plans . . . but he has to go to Italy--now! With Xander and Willow busy holding together their Slayer legions Buffy seems to be the only one with an open schedule to act as Andrew's backup. Hours of travel . . . just Buffy and Andrew . . . Really?
Drew Z. Greenberg, veteran of the Buffy TV show as well as Dexter and Smallville, and current writer on The Clone Wars, teams with series artist Georges Jeanty and executive producer Joss Whedon.Preview Pages (Dark Horse):

Odd that we didn't get a title. Covers rock, though.

- I think this might be the first time I like the Jeanty cover more than the Chen one.
- Italy? Really? Any chance that we're going to finally lay eyes on the Immortal? *g*
- Also: Buffy, Andrew... what about that Spike-and-Angel-shaped elephant in the room, huh?
- Simone, as most people predicted.

Oh god, this is gunna be great. I love Jo Chen's cover but I really wanted to see her do Andrew and Georges's cover is hilarious. Very happy about we'll be learning about Simone's plan.

Oh wow, this sounds awesome! Love the Jeanty cover and especially Buffy's exasperated expression. This issue sounds like so much fun I'm glad they're dealing with Simone finally. All of the upcoming issues sound wonderful - I can't wait.

Yay to the Jeanty cover, but this is probably the first time that I'm gonna say that the Chen cover is all sorts of ugly, IMO. Even if there have been occasions where I've preferred the variants over Chen's painted covers, I've never found them ugly. This one... wow... yeah, there's always a first.

Yeah, Xi, I'm less than excited over this cover. It's actually incredibly disappointing to me. I'll definitely be buying Jeanty's variant when this is released.
Ok, just noticed something weird in the Chen cover. Swords?!!! Maybe it's a deliberate callback to Becoming and Buffy's fight with Angelus, but swords? Really? Buffy's trying to take down the new Slayer currently in love with the almighty gun. The uber-dramatic glare over swords just seems wrong somehow. Maybe it's textual and will be validated but even so...swords? Huh?

My only real gripe with the Jeanty cover is that the concept's been done before; it's very similar to his #8 variant, which in turn is very similar to one of the Alien comic covers. Hey Em! I think those are rapiers... or something very similar... so not even like sword-ish swords... but like fencing pokey things. Maybe it was just so that she could paint them crossing weapons... but Buffy needs to work on her grip... her wrist looks weird.

I'm really liking both covers. I love the detail in Chen's cover - I take it the swords are there to symbolize the struggle between Buffy and Simone, and I also like that Andrew is on another variant. I would like to see how Chen illustrates him though.

I just find the swords odd because of the emphasis put on the struggle between Buffy's and Simone's slayer philosophies centering around the use of guns. Buffy is con, Simone is pro with the addition of Want. Take. Have.
I feel it mixes the thematic metaphor of their struggle.

Is it just me, or does Andrew on the variant look very Jonathan-"Superstar"-ish? And yeah, gotta agree that it's not one of Chen's best...

I still like the Chen one just because I own all the other Chen ones. I just don't really like Buffy on the cover.
I always hate the variants.

Yay for Drew Z. Greenberg! And for those of us who predicted Simone would feature in an issue of this arc, looks like we were right! Jo Chen's cover is immaculate as always. She just continuously outdoes herself! I'm surprised people like George's more. While it's better than his cover for #22, Chen's is still so intense in comparison. I'd love to see Buffy and Simone throw down with some rapiers, not so much as a callback to Becoming, more like Graduation Day with Buffy and Faith but with awesome weapons.
Emmie, I can understand your disappointment with the lack of guns, but I'm sure it will be a running theme through the issue with Simone, just because they aren't featured on the cover doesn't mean it won't be touched on. I feel like the rapiers make for a more personal cover, Buffy Vs. Simone, face-to-face with their opposing ideolgies and their willingness to gut each other so theirs is the winning side. More visceral.
I hope Douglas Petrie does issue 24 and it's the Faith and Giles issue! He has to! Faith is Douglas Petrie!
And I'm happy to hear the little spoiler of Willow's survival! Thank goodness.

I think I'd have preferred the Chen cover to have Buffy fighting with Simone, trying to take a gun out of Simone's hand. It would have continued the message of Buffy "disarming" Simone, who has blatantly abused the gift/weapon of slayerhood that Buffy empowered her with. Buffy disarming Simone of her abuse of power, showing her disapproval of the way Simone chooses to fight.

I love both of the covers, but Jeanty's is much better than Chen's. Finally we will have an issue where Andrew will seem to have a big part.

I think we're expecting a bit too much from Jo Chen. I think we've seen so much great stuff from her that we expect her to WOW us every time. This is still a solid cover with a great Buffy likeness and a cool design, which is enough for me. I would have liked a bit more color, but it's still good.

Buffy disarming Simone of her abuse of power, showing her disapproval of the way Simone chooses to fight. That would have been a great cover. It definitely would've held symbolic meaning more so than the actual cover, but the way you describe it makes me think it would be very difficult to capture in one image. Maybe something like that will happen in the actual issue?
