I'll say this, I love Buffy. I love the show and some of the characters. That said, I love Angel a hell of lot better. I just find the show more interesting than Buffy. There's cooler fight scenes and better storylines (except for Jasmine) and I like the characters more than those on Buffy (except for Spike). Angel was interesting on Buffy, but I think he truly grew on his own show

Honestly, I could take or leave AtS. I've watched it, and enjoyed it, but I didn't like it nearly as much as BtVS and if I'd never seen it or could never see it again, I wouldn't be all that bothered.
Perhaps it has something to do with my general apathy towards Angel's character - he bored me to death in BtVS (except when he was Angelus lol), so I was reluctant about watching AtS in the first place.

I guess my problems with Angel come mainly from the amount that it gets bogged down by prophecy and higher powers, something that Buffy managed to keep under control a lot better. As a result Buffy felt slightly more grounded in reality than Angel, which went for the cataclysmic universe-in-the-balance feel which alienated me as a regular joe-person. I could always relate to characters in Buffy, even though they were going through extraordinary situations. It always felt very personal and warm. Angel lacked that quality for me, making it less important to me, even if it sometimes did produce excellent story-lines.

I tend to view them a one big show. I know and understand that they each have their own feel, and each focuses of different themes; however, to me they are like love and marriage (as in a Married with Children reference, not a sappy statement), you can't have one without the other. It's like one big story told from two different points of view in two different locations. Perhaps it has something to do with my general apathy towards Angel's character - he bored me to death in BtVS (except when he was Angelus lol), so I was reluctant about watching AtS in the first place. I had the same problem initially.

I think it's obvious which show I prefer, so a big no to the thread question. Buffy will always be my second favorite show though.

And if you remember this poll you started, most of the voters said they like both shows equally, and the people that said they prefer Angel to Buffy were almost the same margin as the people that claim they like Buffy over Angel.

Aww you remember this poll?? I had completely forgotten about it. It was like five years ago! Thanks for the link, I'm going to go browse through it and see what outrageous things people said in the thread. Oh and you have my respect now. You earned it.

Angel as a character: Not a fan. Angel the show: A VERY close second to Buffy. The ending: How was it unimaginative? It closed out with the mission statement of the show and in a beautiful way. Yes, it was irksome at first cuz, cliffhanger with no (expected) resolution but in reality that actually worked for the series.

The ending was poor imo because for the whole series they hadn't really set up what the hell was going on. They should have just stuck with a plot-line from earlier in the series instead of going with some no-name Circle of the Black Thorn or whatever the hell they were for the climax that's meant to take Angel down. I mean, who the hell are these guys? If they're all that, why haven't we heard of them ever before? Why didn't they just go with Senior Partners!? It's the question I'll always wonder...

I'm one of those who sees the Buffy and Angel series' as a universe and cannot comprehend one with out the other... could have something to do with the fact I never got to see it air on TV (Small rural town and yadayadah) so when I watched them FINALLY from start to finish I watched Buffy AND Angel. While Buffy was the show I started with and I officially put off watching Angel because I wasn't sure about it (I never had any access to any info about it so it wasn't at the forefront of my mind) after I saw it I felt like it completed my Buffyverse.
The shows ARE very different and obviously they are both of their own characters/storylines and themes etc, but this has never taken away from the love I have for Buffyverse - It has on the other hand added SO MUCH to it.
I don't like Angel BETTER than Buffy, I don't understand how some people who do, NOT THAT I'M AGAINST IT, I completely accept it I just see Buffy as THE show and Angel as the addition. But either way I loved Angel and always will! Buffy and BuffyVERSE are soooo deep in my heart and I take it as a whole.

And in Joss's defense, he did only have five episodes left to tie everything up from the point The WB canceled the show. The whole story of The Circle did pop up pretty quickly, but I think it was handled extremely well under the circumstances. Lindsey's exposition told us everything we needed to know. I just wish they had scrapped The Girl in Question and used that time to add to the final story.
And on-topic, like others have mentioned, I count them both as one big show. I can't watch one without the other or my head explodes. At times I like Buffy better, and at times I like Angel better. All is well.

I prefer Angel to Buffy. It's a pretty big gap too. I have issues with both in places, but the Buffy ones are more severe for me. It gets very clumsy near the end, and the early stuff has dated quite a lot, which I think makes it harder to start over. I love both of them but Buffy will always be my number one series. However, considering there both take place within the same world and have crossed over several times, I can say thats its like I love them equally. But Angel just has a darker tone to it.

I personally love Angel. It's a different show, and even though it's a spin off, I feel it's unfair to compare it Buffy. It is it's own show with it's own mythology and plot separated from Buffy. The cross-overs are almost always character-related. My appreciation for Angel has grown with multiple viewings. My understanding is that many fans don't care for the show because it lacks the light-hearted humor Buffy had? This is true. Angel is dark and complex and was designed to be a very different show than Buffy. Buffy - Action adventure, horror, some fantasy Angel - Horror, film noir, sci fi, detective drama My point is that it's not fair to compare Buffy to Angel. Joss had a different vision for Angel.
