Parents Television Council. TOP 10 WORST
1) Buffy the Vampire Slayer (UPN/ranked #3 last season) Buffy the Vampire Slayer chronicles the adventures of Buffy Summers, the latest in a long line of women endowed with exceptional strength and agility in order to fight vampires and demons.
Buffy ranks number one on the worst list because of its graphic violence and sex, often mixing the two with an underlying occultist element. In one episode near the end of the season, Willow murdered the man who shot and killed her lover, Tara. Willow, furious at the loss of her companion, bound the man to a tree, cast a spell that skinned him alive, and then incinerated him in a burst of flame.
Buffy's sexual content has also become more explicit. Buffy and Spike (a vampire) were shown having sex numerous times this season. In one episode, their lovemaking was so violent that the house they were in literally fell down around them. In the musical episode, oral sex was strongly suggested between Tara and Willow.
Adding insult to injury, Buffy airs during the family hour to a core audience of teenaged fans. www.parentstv.org/PTC/publications/reports/top10bestandworst/2002/top10worst.asp:\ I don't understand why people must complain about shows like this? Its their own fault if their child watches it. Plus they ever herd of the off button on the tv. Do they want us to have nothing but Winnie the Pooh on tv. though they would probably find something to natter about that.

Well of course they would. Winnie the puh teaches our children that it's okay to play with wild animals. We can't have that. No way hosey.

forget buffy being all bad. What about eeyore's manic depressive behaviour, give him some meds before he throws himself out of poohs honey tree. Hes already self harming with that nail stuck in his backside and none of his so called friends even bat an eye lid. My conclusion Christopher Robin is stealing eeyores meds and selling them to tigger.

I get why they're moaning. Buffy's air time was probably very unsuitable for Season 6. They was a lot of sex and violence that season. Fuck the PTC anyway though.

Aside from absent parents another huge issue regarding this is PUSHOVER PARENTS. Parents who let their kids do anything they want. The kid wants to watch Buffy? Well gosh, the parent can't say no. That would ruin their friendship. Kids shouldn't be allowed to rule the household and control the remote, and most of them definitely shouldn't have TVs or computers in their bedrooms. Exactly that is easily one of the worst kinds of parenting. If a parent thinks their kid isn't ready to see something on TV, like a show or movie, then they just shouldn't be allowed to watch it. It's the same thing with video games. I was in a game store the other day and a mom was coming in to preorder the new Grand Theft Auto for her son. The kid couldn't have been more than 8 or 9, and even persisted to reserve the game after the sales clerk told her it was Mature and a 17 or older game. I have nothing against Mature rated games, because the rating system is in place and stores know now not to sell them to minors, but I almost wanted to scream at that parent for how stupid she was. Sure I was playing Mature rated games when I was younger, but not when I was only 8 years old.

i started watching buffy when i was 4. and when i was a kid i didn't like to play games much so i would watch tv with my mom. she used to watch all that dawson's creek, roswell, buffy, angel, and lots of other stuff. so now i'm hooked on tv worse than her but at least i wasn't deprived as a kid. those r the ones that go insane. i have a crazy friend that couldn't see pg-13 movies until she was like 14. i started seeing r-rated movies when i was like 10. and i didn't play video games a lot so whenever i asked for one i would usually get it (reguarless of the rating). i got gta when i was about 12 or 13 i think. i hate uptight parents. they try to shelter their kids from the world, which just makes the kid more curious about the world. "why wont mommy let me watch this tv show? is it that bad? she isn't home right now, so maybe i should watch it and find out..." i can understand where they're coming from a little bit. i'm an only child so i was spoiled, but most kids don't get enough attention at home because they have a big family (like my ex-boyfriend) so they see something on tv and think it's cool and act like that. "snoop dogg is a gangsta? i wanna be one too!" but it really comes down to either raising the child deprived of everything, letting the tv raise the kid, or being like my mom and raising the child while being fair when it comes to ratings depravation.
sorry, i tend to rant when it comes to parental control...

I was watching Buffy when I was very young, too. I didn't see what the big deal was, I didn't understand any of the mature themes. Bad Eggs use to be my favorite episode. Why? Because it didn't require a brain cell.
Season 6 aired when I was in 5th grade. I knew what sex was, but I didn't understand the darkness in it, so Buffy and Spike's relationship didn't mean a thing to me. I had no idea they were having sex on the balcony in Dead Things at the time.

I understand why they would attack Buffy-They are not saying anything about the quality of the show, but rather the content. If I had children, I would probably hold off on letting them watch a show like Buffy until they were in their early teens. I think the show is age-appropriate for the characters. When they are 15, 15 year old stuff happens on the show. Season 2 definitly pushes the envelope with the whole Angel thing-I mean, he's still a grown manpire and she's a child.
In the end, parents need to monitor what their kids are watching and talk to them about it. People expect the networks to do the parenting for them.

I have children. They are not allowed to watch Buffy. My daughter would get nightmares and my son starts trying to stake things.
Sometimes censorship is needed. But I do agree it's the parents job to do so. Which makes this article a good thing. Not all parents can be pop-culture savvy. I know I use consumer reports for alot of decisions I make regarding what I allow in my childrens lives.

Well, I surely wasn't aware that my favorite TV show was evil. I thank these fine people for pointing it out to me. So you all must be, by association, evil as well. I'm just going to put away my DVDs, heavy metal CDs, video games, and various forms of entertainment and go read the Bible for the rest of my damn life.
What I meant was "HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!" So funny...

I briefly skimmed over it, but honestly, who cares? I have zero interest in anything they have to say really. Besides, what are they gonna do, cancel the show?

I've been watching the series since I was 12 (beginning of Season 2), I watched the movie when I was 10. I was one of those kids/early teens that would sit in the room my parents weren't in and watch the shows I know I'm wasn't supposed to watch. I watched porn when I was 8 or 9. Had no idea what was really going on but was damn curious why it made the woman all loud and squirmy. I watched Queer as Folk at 14 when that's a 17+ kind of show.
I understand why people would want to caution parents against the later seasons of Buffy, but they should also realize and explain that not all of Buffy is like that. Season 1 is innocent as all can be, but do they let parents know that, no. They just focus on the worst possible season for censorship and ignore the semi-pre-teen friendliness of earlier seasons. Plus, according to them, "Adding insult to injury, Buffy airs during the family hour to a core audience of teenaged fans." Do they realize that Buffy is rated PG-14? So yeah, teenagers will watch it and the rating says its okay for them to watch. TV does have its own ratings system, so maybe parents should look more at that. A teenage show will have teenagers watching, that's just how the world works.

Okay...um...There's like this thing...that's been around for quite a while now...it's called Parental Control and Blocking..
Anybody heard of it? If the child wants to watch it let them! Jeez, if the parent doesn't say no then they can't complain about its content...
Ahh...all this Council is is people hating on Buffy. LOL. XD. Just kidding. People just take things to extremes.
Besides, I though Eight was PRIMETIME..isn't that enough of a hint that there is going to be 'not-so-family-friendly-themes'??

WARNING, WILL ROBINSON: MASSIVE RANT COMING UP... Okay, you were warned... PTC=whiny, emotionally-stunted wanna-be control freaks, fanatics, and bullies. You know the kind of people you wish you could just ignore, but if you try, they just keep pushing closer into your face to where you can't? Well, that's what these people would be if they had the gonads to do it in person; but they don't, so they use the indirect route: feed people misinformation and half-truths, manipulate gullible, easily influenced people (who already believe to a certain extent, and would rather believe than to take a chance on having their cherished beliefs exposed as utter crap) into giving them the numbers they need to make them a viable pressure group. The object being to use those numbers and the weight of whatever Powers-That-Be they can manipulate to push their will on everybody else. Problem is, way too many of these PTBs are too fucking stupid to comprehend that, if 2 people in the US make a complaint, there are 276,722,657 other people (as of 30 seconds ago) who aren't complaining. And that applies to corporate and government PTBs. Somebody gonna have a nightmare if they watch Buffy? Aw, poor baby! Then maybe Mommy and Daddy ought to be the ones deciding whether Baby gets to watch Buffy - because that varies according to the kid. I've watched monster movies since I was old enough to know the difference between Wolfman and Dracula, and if I ever had a single monster-related nightmare, it's more than I can remember. All of my frickin' nightmares have centered around Real-Life horrors. Maybe we should show Buffy and Shock Theater to the kiddies and ban the news... We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum.
