Did Buffy fall after dying in the Gift?

Originally, I thought I heard Spike say that he caught Buffy after she died in the portal, but after rewatching I realize I just heard wrong.

So did she actually fall and land on the bricks after the portal, or did someone catch her and lay her there? She does look quite peaceful.

She fell, but she was dead before she hit the ground. Though I guess her slayer strength worked long enough to keep her from splattering like a normal person would have.

the way i see it is that when buffy hits the portal, she is sort of suspended half way down the fall. so, when the portal closes, buffy only falls fro half the distance at half the speed

I believe that Buffy was dead when she hit the ground. The velocity and strength of her fall was slowed down by the suspension of her portal, but it was said that the blood had to stop flowing for the portal to close, and that would result in her death b/c she couldn't get enough oxygen to her body and she would die(in a nutshell). So, my money is that the portal killed her.

I absolutely hate it when the superbeings fall off tall buildings - it's just so cringeworthy! And it's a fairly regular occurrence...

See, it didnt make me cringe when she fell off with Glory, but the fact that she just gave her life for the world only to have her corpse fall on a pile of bricks...

the best excuse for why Buffy wasnt a mangled corpse from that fall is pretty obvious?

Shes the Slayer.

Its a wonderful way to explain the physically impossible feats she can perform without a scratch. Shes a superhero hence not being as fragile as normal humans. Its a supernatural drama, sometimes its best not to question the science and physics behind events on the show. Also it would have killed the moment to have a battered and mashed up corpse at the end. Instead we got a beautiful Buffy finally at peace. Well until she was torn out of heaven anyway, and we all know what happens with that.

I think that once she hit the portal...she was suspended in it until it killed her. And when it closed she fell the rest of the way down, landing perfectly posed on the bricks.

Remember, she fell off the tower again with Dawn after being resurrected! And she looked relatively unharmed from that as well!

It would have been impossible to show exploded corpse all over the place. I'm happy remembering Buffy looking like she'd just floated down peacefully and that was that.

I think that what people need to remember about "The Gift" and the final scene of Buffy's dead body is that it wasn't going for realism with blood and smashed up bones, but a mythic death. That's why that image is of her at peace. It was about finality, an image of emotional resonance rather than some horrific scene from a slasher pic or CSI.

She jumped, hit the energy. Dissipated the energy and fell the rest of the distance.

Whatever that was in that portal killed her before she hit the ground. Which makes me wonder, what was in that portal that could kill her just by falling through it?

It's bound to be something like: her life force which is inherent in her blood contains the mystical energy required to close the portal. When this occurs, that force is drained from her and she is dead.

I read somewhere that a writer has said it was electricity(I think). I mean, there's got to be some serious juice that hit her.
