While the message couldn't have been a tactic to keep Agent Ballard off the case, it was clear that one of its purposes was to get Agent Ballard to run back home to Mellie. Whoever sent the message had high enough security clearance to know that someone was being sent after Mellie, and Adelle even sent Laurence out of the room to give that assignment. I wonder if Agent Ballard was sent running back in case something went wrong with triggering Mellie, because then someone else would have to take out the sex offender before he hurt another Active. I didn't see the message as clearly getting Ballard to go after Mellie who was in trouble. I'll have to re-watch it now. I think they were trying to tell Ballard to shut up and lay low, they weren't going to kill him. The engagement was complete once the officer was shot with Ballard's gun, effectively taking him off the case which was the mission made evident by Dewitt and the head of security. I think it was a warning for Ballard to not tell anyone else what he knew, that anyone else would be targeted, making Ballard immediately think of Mellie, not necessarily as a parameter for Echo to send Ballard after Mellie. Now that I think about it, the mole may not be Dewitt. The message didn't give any indication that Mellie was an active and said that the mole didn't know what the objective of the dollhouses was (I'm thinking sleeper agents). Claire immediately comes to mind, but I didn't think she had the capacity to edit the parameters of the imprint. Obviously Boyd helped the mole, either to his knowledge or not, but if knowingly, he would definitely help Claire.

The message stated that Ballard wouldn't be killed by the inside man because they needed him. However, all others were fair game. Ballard immediately jumped to the conclusion that Mellie could be in danger, which I thought was kinda sweet.

Okay. I just rewatched. I don't understand why Adelle is such a popular theory. It seems to me that she's the only one who it makes absolutely no sense to be. The person had to be very sneaky. I feel like Adelle could probably waltz right in and tell Topher to put such and such into the personality. What does Adelle really have to fear from Topher? Plus, Adelle doesn't seem like the type to be that "unprofessional" or "amateurish." She'd find a more smooth and British way to infiltrate. Ivy is SO obvious that she's probably a Red Herring. Claire is interesting. If it is Claire, then she and Boyd were definitely working together. They've been pretty chummy lately. I thought it was really strange that Boyd knew about Victor's "man reactions," because only Claire and Topher knew anything about it as of "True Believer." Claire and Boyd have obviously been talking. It's clearly not Topher. The brainscreen was on when he got back from talking with Boyd even though we had DEFINITELY seen him turn it off earlier. Dominic makes no sense. Plus, he didn't know about Mellie being used to kill Hearn until after Adelle had sent him. I also don't think the message had anything to do with Mellie; Paul just interpreted it that way. And it is kind of sweet

Echo simply said that they wouldn't attack Paul, they could attack those closest to him, she never said specifically when, he just assumed that since he left Mellie alone right after she agreed to help him, that they were gonna kill her.

not necessarily... Nah, I mean the message in general. What if there is no mole and they just want Paul to follow by their lead? How does he know the imprint wasn't made to look like someone messed with it?

Nah, I mean the message in general. What if there is no mole and they just want Paul to follow by their lead? How does he know the imprint wasn't made to look like someone messed with it? That's what I originally took it to be in the first place...there's been so much speculating that it could be a million things, especially if the identity of the mole is rather murky right now. I wonder if when Echo told Paul that they'd go after those closest to him, it was a back up plan to make sure Mellie was alright. Like a 'just in case' scenario in case the 3 flowers in a vase didn't work, even though Adele has surveillance over Paul's apartment. It played out all like they wanted, whether they planned Echo telling Ballard the information or not. There's that bit of information, like about all the other dollhouses, that makes the message a little bit tricky. That's where it starts to go into the gray area and makes me wonder.

Off topic.... does Sierra sound Australian?

I think she is. I remember in Stage Fright Echo used Dushku's RL Boston accent and Sierra was using the actress's (blanking right now) RL Australian accent.

Yes, Dichen Lachman... She was on an Australian soap opera called Neighbours... Just wanted to see if 'Sierra' is also Australian or has a bad fake American accent

i thought she did pretty well with the Taffy accent... but she's definitely better at the whole "american accent" than Anna Torv of Fringe.

i'm switching to Ivy... she's the only one that the viewers have seen alone with the computers other than topher... actually, she's the only character we've seen that can operate a computer.

I really can't decided who I think it is.
Ivy just seems a bit too obvious? It just wouldn't be very shocking if we found out it was her. Also, we know so little about her I just don't think I would really care it was her? Saunders also seems a little too obvious.
My brain storm is that maybe Echo has something to do with it? Thats why Alpha left her alive? So she could infiltrate the Dollhouse from the inside. When Topher left the room, she could have fiddled with the machines herself? There are a lot of flaws with that idea I know, but I feel it must be someone really shocking.

Switching the title of the thread to "Messages to Ballard" so that we can keep using this thread to continue to discuss the possible source of the messages instead of starting a new thread for every Active that delivers a message.

sounds goodddd... oh and i was talking about this to one of my friends: so we know Mr. Dominic was the spy and a lot of us thought it was this person that sent the messages... but i had to stop the group of us after someone said "Oh we can finally put that whole 'spy in the dollhouse sending ballard messages' business." i said: "Wait now, we have no legitimate evidence that This person sent those messages..." and the debate ensued... being the resident Whedonologist of my group, i of course won. another thing bothered me about A Spy in the House of Love (?)... When Echo was interrogating the various people: Ivy, Topher, Mr. Dominic, Boyd... and finally came to Boyd, he acted very cocky and this threw me off until Echo said "I don't know why. But i trust you." at that moment, my face made that gaspy shocked look and my brain went into "crazy conspiracy theorist what-if? mode"... and i finally came to the conclusion that i think Boyd is going to take advantage of this... Strategically, it makes sense if Boyd is trying to bring down the Dollhouse, to essentially manipulate one of the best if not the best active. i have a lot more but it's midnight, i'm sleepy, and i honestly would be typing for 3 hours. oh and side note: i was surfing this site called spoilers.tv and i came upon this, the plot, cast, and guest stars of Briar Rose... two of these names confused me: ALPHA REVEALS HIMSELF AND BALLARD FINDS THE CREATOR OF THE DOLLHOUSE ON “DOLLHOUSE” FRIDAY, MAY 1, ON FOXAlan Tudyk (“Firefly,” “Serenity”) Guest Stars Ballard’s investigation leads him to the agoraphobic designer of the Dollhouse (guest star Alan Tudyk), and the story of “Sleeping Beauty” foreshadows Echo’s future, while allowing her to help a young girl deal with her traumatic past. Adelle goes to the attic in search of answers, while Alpha reveals himself and sets his game in motion in the “Briar Rose” episode of DOLLHOUSE airing Friday, May 1 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (DOL-112) (TV-14 D, L, V) Cast: Eliza Dushku as Echo; Tahmoh Penikett as Paul Ballard; Olivia Williams as Adelle DeWitt; Fran Kranz as Topher Brink; Harry Lennix as Boyd Langton; Enver Gjokaj as Victor; Dichen Lachman as Sierra Guest Cast: Amy Acker as Dr. Claire Saunders; Reed Diamond as Laurence Dominic; Alan Tudyk as Stephen Kepler; Miracle Laurie as Mellie/November; Liza Lapira as Ivy; Aisha Hinds as Loomis; Hannah Leigh Dworkin as Susan; Judith Moreland as Renee What the Hell? so Dominic is back how?!? maybe Alan Tudyk isn't gonna play Alpha after all...

Dominic could be back in a number of capacities. The easiest explanation is a flashback. But his personality is recorded, and when he threatened that the NSA would come looking for him, DeWitt simply said that they would let him out to say that he was okay, and then they would stick him back into his box. Meaning that he can be imprinted (or at least selectively imprinted) with his own persona, to whatever extent that Topher is ordered to.
