This was the best issue yet! I can't say that I am thrilled with Fred coming back. I still think that Illyria had/has a lot of developing to do before we see her go. True that each issue we saw her slowly slipping into a change, but was it enough? I seem to think that Wesley is the trigger, not sure how, but I am sure he is. And will this stick? Or is it just a Hell thing? June can not come soon enough. By then I hope that we have some answers to our questions. I loved seeing the team together again! Felt like old school Angel. What is up with Gunn? He wants the team to fight as one? Does he really think that it will help his odds at taking Angel down when the whole team is fighting against him?

Ok, yeah, I guess the source wasn't that trustworthy. Still, for whatever reason, the gang believed it, and yet here we see a member of the gang contradicting it. I suppose Lorne could have been trying to delude himself, but the line still just felt.... weird.
Things I did love about this issue though: Groo. Oh, good god, Groo. I can only see the humor of Groo growing exponentially. At first when the idea of a Groo series was mentioned, I thought it was silly. Now... I dunno, that might actually be a lot of fun, haha. Secondly, Gunn. Seeing more of good guy vamp Gunn made me way more excited about what's to come next than the "twist" did. I'm guessing he's gonna play a much larger role in the next arc, and I'm dying to see what it is. And seeing him determined to save civilians made me all kinds of happy. ... even if his crew WAS hoping to eat some after.... (Hey, Gunn wasn't! Maybe... heh). And despite the fact I still don't get what took the crew so long to get back together (Lorne's big revelation seemed more like a "Duh, you freaking retard!" moment to me), it WAS certainly good to see them back together.
But Brian, you still haven't answered my burning, desperate question! Is there any slight, miniscule chance that you could maybe, please, talk to someone in the right place to get that beautiful cover made into a poster? I'm sure I'm not the only fan who would buy it on the spot.

I join the chorus - I loved this issue. I never believed that Fred's soul was gone - why, because I didn't believe the sources of the information. Her soul may or may not be in heaven, but the snippets still in Illyria may be more than mere electonic brain charges and leftover memories. I don't think that Spike knew this would happen - the change into Fred - but he has been protecting Illyria and knows how hard Wesley's death hit her. Fred or Illyria, I think Spike is at a point where he will want to save them both.
Any one else notice that Gunn and Wesley have both referenced the "seeds" that have been planted?
I've been trying to think of what might be buried deep into Angel that creates the vampire glamour? Is it a physical object inside his body or a spell residing deep inside his mind?
I choose to think that Angel's comments on shaving and hair cutting have more to do with the fact that he can see in the mirror when he would have had to do "blind" before. And, he has to be careful not to knick himself with the razor - cause don't look to hero-y with little bits of toilet tissue stuck to your face. Alternatively, perhaps the hair grows on a vampire but what takes days on a human takes years on a vamp. In any case, I can live with the inconsistency - if there is one. A bigger question might be - where is he getting the replacement clothing that keeps getting destroyed in the fighting?
As for Gunn - cool - some sort of behind the scenes plan in place.
Groo - love him, love the talk, what isn't to love about Groo. When will they tell him about Cordy? I suspect that he will take it as a warrior would, honoring her memory and bravery.
And Lorne - Brian aced him I think. And everytime I see those ladies who fetched Angel, all I here is the ladies who put the ptoection spell on Caritos "...hmmm....Angel..." said very sexy and dreamy.
Now I gotta go back and reread everything to pick up all the clues I've missed.

i LOVED iT!! and for me to say that about one of the comics is impressive! Having everyone there together really made it feel like Angel. And I loved seeing Fred...maybe something to do with the whole in hell thing. Since Fred wasn't with her loved ones, she couldn't be in heaven, so her soul (which was to be in heaven) got trapped in with Illyria.. lol i've been saying this all along. "fred is alive in Illyria" and i always found it shocking how Gunn, Wes and the group just accepted Knox and Dr. Sparrows "her soul was destroyed" Id be glad if it wasnt. Though it made her death ever more heartbreaking. Id hate to see Illyria go, i've come to like that character. Wish we could have both.

Even though I'm glad that Freds back. I was hoping so much that it was Cordelia that was the surprise character at the end. She was so important to the first three seasons of Angel, and the comic would not be good if Cordy didn't at least make an appearance in it as a ghost or sometin..Brian, bring Cordy Back!!!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised no one connected the dots on that one. I thought for sure everyone would be talking about that line. Angel's inner-monologue box comment about the glamour being deep inside him coupled with the line about the night it was put in being "long and awkward" made me think it was a magical suppository. But I dismissed the thought as the sick conclusion of an odd, perverted mind. (Mine, but yours too, if I'm right.)

Actually, she was in several panels during the fight, but still, yeah, she hasn't done too much.
Anyway, yeah, I loved that Angel theme. It was awesome in S1, and then after that I was sad when it basically disappeared. Overjoyed when they brought it back for S5. I can totally imagine it alongside the events of the comics.
I dunno about bringing Cordy back. I understand there are to diametrically opposed camps on that issue, and also that little I say will sway anyone of either side. But I don't really see what role she could play beyond what she already did. Her story was a wonderful one, but it was done. I'm of the very lightly populated camp of the people who'd rather see Kate back. Her disappearance from the show was always jarring, and it'd be nice to see what became of her.

Okie, first off, I loved the issue. It really did give a lot of what I wanted, and I've gotta give it props for that. But, as the unadulterated love has already been lavished upon it, I feel it's time to get into nitpicks. First off, there were a couple things in this issue that seemed like mistakes. Perhaps they're not, and I'm just missing some piece of vital information, but I don't see how they couldn't be. The hair thing has been mentioned already. We've clearly seen both Spike and Angel grow hair before. Spike, as mentioned, when he went looney in the basement, and as for Angel, well, when he saved the puppy in the 20s, it was nice and short, only to go hippie long in the 70s. And if you want to claim that was a wig, then I will go further forward to Angel, Fearsome Hunter of Rats, who also had longer hair, and given the lack of personal hygiene, I doubt he'd bother to put on a wig every morning. This is a small error, however, and I should not have bothered to type so much about it. I can be silly like that sometimes. Still, it did take me out of the story a little bit as I had to scratch my head. The bigger mistake is the line that led to Lorne's revelation. It would have been just another small mistake except for the fact it played such a large role in the narrative. "I thought Fred was the victim, but when all is said and done, she wins. She's in Heaven." Except she's not. And not because she's not with her loved ones. The most heartbreaking thing about Fred's death came when the gang learned that her soul was burned up as fuel for Illyria's resurrection. It didn't go to heaven. It didn't go anywhere. It was destroyed. Big mistake. Ok, moving on. Overall, I really did like the issue, but I was a little underwhelmed by it. The gang getting back together didn't really surprise me, and honestly, I don't really understand what took them so long to do it. I remember thinking in the last issue "why is everyone not just teaming back up already?" It seemed kinda silly for them to be running around on their own for so long. And what's with the deal of Spider and them seeing Angel as the Big Bad? I'm assuming that we'll get some explanation of it in First Night and/or Spike:AtF, but right now I don't at all get why they're so insistent that Spike kill Angel. Finally, the "big twist" at the end that we've been promised for a few months was actually pretty predictable. It's been hinted at before, during her previous fight with Angel, and we knew it was a plotline that had been planned for Season 6. I had been assuming since issue 3 it was gonna happen at some point, I just didn't expect it to be the big twist cause it wasn't really all that twisty. Don't get me wrong, it was a fine ending. I think the only problem here is how much it was hyped up as the end-all be-all twist of the series. If it hadn't been for that, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. So let this be a lesson: ease up on the hype, it almost never ends well. So, Brian, if you don't hate me now (Please don't! I'm very very sorry! I really love AtF and you've been doing a great job writing it! Even the show made mistakes sometimes! =) ), I have a question for you. What are the chances IDW might start marketing posters of the Justice League homage cover? Cause I want that on my wall. Badly. i feel like you read my mind and wrote this for me i couldnt agree with all of this more. i just felt this was so cheap and the 'gangs all here' pitch was lacking i mean thats pretty much what happened in not fade away and as for fred sometimes people need to stay dead, especially in this verse. Buffy herself has said that "when youve bowed, you leave the crowd" fred joyce tara cordelia - all these people ressurections would only cheapen their deaths, which were done so perfectly, they all had such great exits and it would be a shame to take away from that for shock value in the comic, although i love the comics... i dunno i just feel like theres so much potential thats not being fulfilled as to give these characters a typical ending and ok anyone else see two guys that look like jay and silent bob on the top left corner of the second page?

Another excellent issue, especially loved the Gang getting back together because despite what everyone else thought...I sort of didn't think it was inevitable. There was a lot of great stuff in this issue, a surprisingly large amount of little character moments that felt so in tune with the series. Among them: Gwen/Connor having a somewhat caring bond between them. We knew Gwen and Nina were hanging about but this sort of suggests a friendship has been built. Angel's hair troubles - Angel, always the vain man that he was, still cares a hell of a lot about his appearance even before a huge battle. I believe his issues with shaving and hair cutting weren't meant to baffle people as much as they did, he clearly just didn't cut his own hair before, now he can (with the reflection) and he's really the only one around who can (sadly all the hair dressers are enslaved). Spike - Still very much trying to be a hero and it was somewhat odd (prior to the ending of this issue) why he cared so much about Illryia and why he was going to such lengths to protect her, now we know. He also came very close to admitting he cared about Angel, how sweet. Gunn - While he may have "Got the gang back together" he has stated that he wants to kill Angel, it's possible the others are in his sights as well. Also, while he is saving civilians, we saw him do this in the first issue, only to later have him feasting on them. and ok anyone else see two guys that look like jay and silent bob on the top left corner of the second page? Yeah I'd say that was pretty intentional. Having been a long time Kevin Smith fan, I believe he and Brian Lynch have been friends for some time.

"We're putting the band back together.""We're on a mission from God."Sorry. To quote Lorne: "I just love that movie so much." (Tho in his case it was a different movie.) You know, ever since the show ended I've been hearing people online complain about the ignominy of Fred's death--specifically, the complete destruction of her soul. How it wasn't fair, and that a character as good and sweet and genuine as her deserved better, and that it was one of the worst moves Joss ever made. My answer was always: "Well, who told them that her soul was destroyed? Creepy Dr. Sparrow. That's it. That was their one and only source. And they never even bothered to confirm it, or do any research to see if he was right ! They just believed him! For something as important as Fred's life and the existence of her soul, why would they ever just take his word on it?!?" So it's fantastic to finally see that someone else--in a position to actually do something about it--thought the same thing. Brian, you're even awesomer than I already thought you were!! And about the haircut thing. Okay, maybe that was an "Oops" along the lines of Joss bringing back Warren in S8. But I think I can explain it away. Yes, vampires' hair grows (don't forget Angel also had a mustache in 1838 in "Amends"). But in the past--at least during the periods where he cared about his appearance--Angel was able to walk into a barbershop and get it cut. Now that LA is in hell, the barbershops are pretty much all closed, and his only companion is a non-corporeal (or "non-corporal" ) W&H rep who can't hold a pair of scissors. Therefore, he has to cut it himself. Has anyone noticed that there's a third cover for this issue that I don't think has even been posted here? It's got Wes and Illyria on it, and tho I only saw a lo-res copy, it looked pretty nice...

Ok, I just read it, and it was the best so far, I liked how everyone was in it battling together. Wouldn't that be cool if the rest of the series they will all stay at one location, and work as a team. When I saw Fred return, I was like "OK". I mean it was ok, but I didn't think it was necessary. I would have like it much more if Cordelia came back.
