why is gru's hair on the cover all short and his hair in the comic all long and crazy? They originally planned for Groo to have his hair short like he did when he left Angel in Season 3, but then it was decided that it would be better for Groo to look like his old self, but the cover was already done.

Angel shaving was great to see. I just have come to the conclusion that vampire's grow hair a lot slower than humans do and the reason he's gotten good at it is because he's had to do it more often than he would have to usually. Hey, great theory! ;D I'll buy that for a buck. That was Lorne, showing up to rally the troops to Angel's defense. Thanks for letting me know that was Lorne. Makes sense now.

I really don't see the hair thing as difficult to understand. Vampires clearly grow hair and facial hair in this verse, Angel however is simply not used to grooming himself, especially the reflection part. Angel's a pretty vain guy, I think it's safe to assume he had someone cutting his hair all this time and never really had to look at himself shaving before.

Angel's a pretty vain guy, I think it's safe to assume he had someone cutting his hair all this time and never really had to look at himself shaving before. But who? I'm pretty sure that at the start of BTVS, the idea was that once you are a Vampire, your hair does not grow, like with Anne Rice vampires. That explained why when Angel came back from hell in season 3 his hair was just as long as in Becoming, and he didn't have beard. But then came Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been and then Lessons. That theory was destroyed. Vampire hair grows... but assuming that Angel and Spike have been cutting it all this time is a little difficult. Because... well, remember that Angel was imprisoned in a box in the bottom of the sea for months and again, same hair. Anyway I really liked this issue, I love this arc and don't want L.A. to be free of hell too soon. I would also like to say something to the talented man Brian Lynch, as he might read this. Now that Gunn is evil a confrontation with Angel and the gang is imminent, but I'd like to take a second to remember the episode Why We Fight. Our friend Joss made a little mistake and allowed Angel to dust the vampire in that episode while saying that there's no cure for being a vampire, and evil, etc. It seems that Angel didn't watch the Grave saga over at BTVS because he didn't seem to know about a weird tribe in Africa where it's nighttime at the same time that in America, and in a cave there is a demon with glowing eyes that grant you wishes (or screws you, depending on if you got the plot twist or not) and can give you a soul if you fight a muscleman and some roaches. What I'm trying to say is don't make the gang dust Gunn without at least considering the option of going to Africa first. Thanks, Merso.

Alright, but it could be argued that down in that box he received no nourishment of any kind and therefore didn't have much in the cell growth department. Clearly vampires work different then us. By that point we'd already seen Angel with a mustache, long crazy hair (after it was cut) and Spike with longer hair. They grow hair, just differently then us. As for who was cutting it? They did live in Hair Dresser Paradise.

But... but... why did Angel shave his beard but didn't cut his hair while he was feeding off rats in L.A.? MAYBE he can't grow a beard or moustache and the one he had in Amends was fake... I think this will forever be one of the big mysteries in the Buffyverse. The Eternal Hair Mystery.

For the love of god can we let the hair thing go already? Let's create a sub-board, OK?

The Hell dimension probably prevented hair growth and he probably shaved every now and again (when he could) when he was on the streets eating rats, all soulful.

I'm gonna just say that a vampire's hair grows super slow. If a vampire doesn't age, it's not a HUGE leap to maintain that his hair wouldn't grow all that quickly. There and THERE.

I'm sorry man but that's not strong enough to end The Eternal Hair Mystery. And please don't dust Gunn before at least making a reference to the demon in Africa. Your semi-fan, Merso.

Can we not just call the hair thingy artistic license? Soo... being stuck on the godforsaken island and everything, I only just got hold of the comic. But boy was it worth the wait! Absolutley stellar issue. It felt like it should have had all the swelling orchestral music playing over it. I may read to it with the LOTR music or something And though I've never been a huge fan of Uhru's artwork, it was absolutley perfect in this issue, especially in the last few pages, with the shot of Illyria turning round... and then Fred standing there... it was just kinda like... whoa! (Yep. ATF has turned all my Queen's English into Australian surfer dude.) I already knew about Fred, cos I have an unhealthy addiction to spoilers, but that didn't make her return any less stunning.

Angel's hair grows pretty fast in the supposed 19 days between 'Chosen' and 'Just Rewards' though, when he's sporting his new dodgy early Season 5 hairstyle In fact, that's even faster growth than a normal human. I think along with the Connor thing it was part of his contract with W&H to give him a new Queer Eye style makeover!

Well, with LA stuck in Hell right now, getting to Africa--or anywhere else--is pretty unlikely. And even if they escaped and made it there, would Gunn be willing to fight for his soul like Spike did? I'm gonna say probably not. Besides, wouldn't it just be easier to use an Orb of Thesulah and the Gypsy spell? Willow's already done it twice to Angel; if they get home, they could just give her a call. But I'd hope they wouldn't take either option. Three vampires with souls might be a little much (even if Angel's not currently a vampire)...

Alright, really, there's got to be some suspension of disbelief in a story where a T-Rex fights a Dragon guys... I think the slow-hair growth makes enough sense for me.

Hehe oh that T-Rex had me in stitches. His one line the entire comic just came at the perfect part and was just hilarious. Here's hoping Angel can tame him as well so he can stay around for a while.

Finally got one here in AUS. Aww I love how Lorne is being used! I missed him so in season 5. Interesting to see Fred back, I hope its not ANOTHER Resurected character, but something a little more interesting relating to Illyrias time spasms. Art was at its best this issue IMO, although i thought mine was misprinted at first when it jumped straight into the battle with everyone there. Oh, and a talking T-Rex?? Maybe a Hell dimension somewhere with a bunch of talking dinosaurs... All and all i give issue 5 a 8 out of 10.

I agree in that neither option should be taken, I was just asking that whatever happens, the characters don’t ignore the fact that it is possible for a vampire to regain his soul if he wants. Hehe oh that T-Rex had me in stitches. His one line the entire comic just came at the perfect part and was just hilarious. Yeah, it was…

I thought Angel was human now? Meaning his hair grows? I don't see a need for any explanation by anyone, unless I've missed something. And I still wholeheartedly believe Fred is NOT inside Illyria. Illyria altered her outer appearance to resemble the last time she saw Wesley. You can all shoot, stab, burn, cut, and beat me if you want, but until I get a confirmation, unh unh.

Hi, new here. Tried not to get sucked into message boards, but damn this comic is good and I could resist the temptation no longer to find a good place to discuss it. This looks like a good place (although I find myself being overly mesmerized by the animated smilies). Diving in: Sorta like the series, the comic started a little slow, but it's really revving up now--really loving where it's going, and I think I've re-read issue 5 somewhere around 15 times now (whereas many comics I read once or twice and toss into my comic box). LOVED seeing everyone get together and that Lorne instigated it--I think he could have an important role in this story as mediator of sorts. Thoughts on Fred: when an issue or two ago "showed" Illyria snarling behind locked security doors, I figured she was going nearly full-primordial demon.... so I wondered, therefore, if she was also going fully (or mostly) human as well. So I sorta expected "Fred" to appear, though I love the particular way it was done in this issue--very dramatic, very cool--shows us a lot and yet keeps us guessing. I remember in... "Shells," I think it was, Dr. Sparrow saying that Fred's soul was "Consumed in the fires of ressurrection" or something like that.... for whatever reason, I always interpreted that as her soul wasn't destroyed (that's just how Angel interpreted it)--it meant Illyria absorbed Fred's essence as she was reborn. In my interpretation, Fred's soul is intertwined with Illyria's essence, hence why Illyria found herself experiencing unexpected sensations and confusion of identity even in Season 5 ("my mouth is not my mouth; I do not know what it will say"). When Fred's memories were restored via the shattering of the cube, that made Fred's memories whole, and therefore perhaps even more prominent in Illyria's already slightly fractured mind/sense of identity. So in a way, what we've seen so far is merely a continuation of what was established about Illyria in season 5--to a dramatic effect, because in HelL.A., everyone who has a dual nature feels it powerfully so. For her, however, rather than experiencing her dual nature simultaneously, she seems in danger of splitting between extremes--monster-Illyria-behind-the-door, and whatever's left of Fred (which I see as probably still Fred-Illyria, not a true "ressurection" but in this form Fred's personality and her soul-motives are dominant). The interesting thing about that is that might mean Blue-Fred-Body-Illyria is really a hybrid of the two extremes--her attempt at keeping herself together. That may be why she was trying to get her frustrations out on Angel and the dragon--trying to vent her primordial primal urges of destruction as well as she could so she wouldn't go into full monster form. And I'm sure, in a way, Fred has her own reasons for wanting to give Angel a pummelling (post memory-return, Fred realizes what Angel did to get them at W&H; she's probably also not thrilled to be sucked into a Hell dimension again), so she has no trouble keeping Blue-Frillyria form when beating on Angel (but Fred's instincts block Illyria's from actually killing him). (As an aside, Fred has a fairly nasty vindictive side--tossing her pursuers into the Drokken Gully, Prof. Seidel, tasering Connor; some of her darker nature and Illyria's are probably more complementary then some might like to admit.) Illyria's gone full-Fred before, I'd wager, given Spike's reaction to Wesley--he wouldn't want him to leave if he wasn't expecting Illyria to have a turn. And this is probably also why he's so bent on helping Illyria--he's not only helping "Blue" whom he befriended (as much as one befriends a primordial), but also Fred, whom he feels he owes a great deal. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised that inside the "Safety room" there weren't only claw marks, but a good deal of scribbling on the walls as well. I'm not too worried about Fred--if she can turn into Fred, she can turn back into Frillyria and Monster Illyria, or even if the change isn't voluntary, girl is fast and quick witted. She'll probably time a dodge past the fire-beast, causing him to plow into the spore-champion, making the spore-champion explode, sending heated-plasma-like goo into the dinosaur, which then falls and crushes She-Skip, or something. Okay, that might be a little too over the top, but it would be amusing. Physicist 1, Champions of Hell 0.
