I'm not sure if there has been a thread about this before, if there has mods feel free to delete this.
Anyway, I was just wondering what everyone here thought the saddest part of "The Body" was? Obviously, the whole episode is sad, but was there any parts that just got to you more than others? For me there where two parts that just got to me like no other.
Anya's speech. What touched me about this scene was that Anya finally got how everyone in the room felt. She never really understood human feelings until this moment and I just love it. I'm going to post that speech just because it is so moving.
"I don't understand how this all happens. How we go through this. I mean, I knew her, and then she's- There's just a body, and I don't understand why she just can't get back in it and not be dead anymore. It's stupid. It's mortal and stupid. And-and Xander's crying and not talking, and-and I was having fruit punch, and I thought, well, Joyce will never have any more fruit punch ever, and she'll never have eggs, or yawn or brush her hair, not ever, and no one will explain to me why."
The other part that gets to me the most is Willow trying to decide what to wear. She is just so panicked and I just want to hug her. Makes me so sad to see Willow like that.
So, what do you all think?

I agree, definitely Anya's monologue. Emma's best moment on the show, for me.
The final scene between Buffy and Dawn was also pretty sad, as was the entire beginning.

The saddest part to me is the beginning when you're watching Buffy on the phone and she's trying to give CPR and she says her mom is cold and asks if she should try to warm her up. And the way she just hangs up when she realizes her mom is dead and calls Giles, not even explaining what just saying "You have to come." The entire scene just rips me up inside. Sarah Michelle Gellar was really amazing in it.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was really amazing in it. Agreed. As soon as she starts running over to the couch, trying to wake her up, and finally just screaming "mom" immediately just makes me cry like a crazy person. Of course Anya's monologue. The scene where Buffy tells Dawn also kills me. The way Michelle asked "where's mom" is haunting.

The Anya scene.
It's heart breaking! I always feel like crying for hours when I hear her talk about how she realized Joyce would never do the things she does(Eating eggs, ect.).
Also, the Buffy scene at the beginning. It was so sad!
All of the cast did a wonderful job in this episode.

when Buffy tells Dawn and when Willow cries if Willow cries, i also cry
when they all meet up at the hospital and comfort eachother gets me too, but it's more in a "aw, you guys!" way rather than an upsetting way

By and far Anya's speech. It easily fits into my top five Buffyverse moments.

when Buffy tells Dawn and when Willow cries if Willow cries, i also cry Totally agree. Wilow is the best character in the Buffyverse in my opinion and when she is upset, I am also upset. when they all meet up at the hospital and comfort eachother gets me too, but it's more in a "aw, you guys!" way rather than an upsetting way The hospital scene makes me laugh a little bit. Especially when Xander, Anya and Willow go and get snacks, and they come back with arm loads and Willow says "We panicked". I laugh because it so sweet and touching, but not in a crying sad way.

"WE MUSTN'T TOUCH THE BODY!!" Completely agree with that, and then Buffy's face when she realises what she's just said, that she's referring to her mother as just a body - heartbreaking.

The entire cast was completely amazing in this episode. The saddest moment was Anya's speech, for sure. Emma made the audience feel what everyone was feeling. I also thought the surrealism of the first scene, with Buffy walking through the house in a daze was so well done. SMG was awesome.

Saddest part? OMG, how could you pick just one moment?! The entire episode is a heart breaker! Saddest moments for me: Buffy coming home and realizing her mom is dead on the couch; rushing over to her saying mom over and over and shaking her body as if trying to wake her from sleep. Giles coming and Buffy screaming, "we can't move the body!" Giles rushing over to comfort Buffy. Anya's speech. Buffy having to go to Dawn's school and tell her. Ok, now I'm depressed.

Aww, no, it's ok. The Body is a beautifully masterful episode of television even though it is so heart breaking. No worries. It is definitely worthy of discussion.

I think for connection to the character, I'd go with Buffy at the beginning, especially when she knows it's all over and has those moments inside alone before Giles arrives. However, I really feel for Dawn when Buffy tells her at school. Even though we don't get to hear the conversation, it tears me up inside. Side note: has Joss ever said that he deliberately chose an actress who looked like Kristine Sutherland to play the art teacher who so mournfully watches the scene?

I agree with most of the sad moments listed, but I'd add that Buffy's little delusion is probably the saddest thing, since it's an innate human quality... we try to delude ourselves that some things can just change, even if there's no basis for that hope. Guess the desire for miracles lives on...

I usually cry through the whole episode, waiting to watch it at night when I won't have to show my puffy-red eyes after the experience, and when my mom is around so we can watch it together so I don't feel like "OMG MOM ARE YOU OK!?!"; in other words, I prepare for this episode. That said, I think the part that gets me is a very small, subdued moment between Xander and Willow. When Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya are standing in her dorm room, Xander gets really upset saying someone should be held responsible, claiming that it's the doctor's fault that Joyce is now dead. He's becoming frantic with grief, and Willow just looks at him:
XANDER: I'll tell you what it is. It's the frickin' doctors. I mean, they just let her out, you know? Clean bill of health. Dig a hole in your skull. Here's a band-aid. Next!
WILLOW: (OS) Xander...
XANDER: They should have checked her over, they should have had her in. Well, don't we have enough monsters in this town, the doctors gotta help 'em out?
WILLOW: Xander, I-I don't think it was ... any ... it just happened.
XANDER: Things don't happen! (frowns) I mean ... they don't *just* happen. Somebody... I mean, somebody's got...
WILLOW: Okay. (puts up her fists) Let's go. Come on, you and me. Come on.
(Xander stares at her, then sighs. He walks over to her, kisses her on the forehead.)
XANDER: You know I can't take you.
WILLOW: Damn straight.
That moment conjures up all my sappy family love for my brother and it just rips me apart, like sobbing, can't-breathe, painful crying. Definitely the saddest part for me.

Anya's speech is by far the saddest part. Pretty much the whole scene in dormroom is sad with Willow, Xander, Anya, and Tara.

I agree that Anyas speech is the saddest, because although she has been pretty stumped by human emotion she managed to sum everything up in her anya-way Also Willow, being fixated on what to wear, so realistic, at times like this strange and unimportant things can really tip you over the edge. Great episode
