The saddest part for me was the vamp attack at the end - it shows that the world doesn't care if you've had a really really bad day, it'll keep throwing things at you. That coupled with the no music really made the fight gritty and terrible to watch.

Anya's speech hands down. She's really the only character who is cold and blunt and all of a sudden, she's crying and confused. That really speaks to her character.

The whole beginning with Buffy, and Anya's speech were the saddest parts in my opinion.

WILLOW: Okay. (puts up her fists) Let's go. Come on, you and me. Come on. (Xander stares at her, then sighs. He walks over to her, kisses her on the forehead.) XANDER: You know I can't take you. WILLOW: Damn straight. This part actually makes me giggle a little. I just feel like it is such a Willow thing to do to put up her fists like that, in away to get Xander to calm down a little. And then they way Willow says damn straight I find really adorable. I <3 Willow so. Anyway, I'm curious to know if there are any moments in the episode that make you laugh a little bit? I have already mentioned the two that made me laugh a little. This scene with Xander and Willow and the scene where Xander, Willow and Anya go to get snacks and they come back with arm loads and Willow says "We panicked". I don't mine t sound insensitive here, but I just thought we could lighten the mood by talking about things that made us laugh a little bit in the episode.

Side note: has Joss ever said that he deliberately chose an actress who looked like Kristine Sutherland to play the art teacher who so mournfully watches the scene? Interesting. I never thought of that before but now that you mention it, the teacher definitely resembles Joyce. Which makes the whole scene even more heart breaking now. Dawn asking "Where did she go?" Oh, how could I have forgotten this moment?

I agree with you here - I always get a little heart-warming chuckle between sobs at this moment. Willow does look totally adorable in mock-fight mode and it is simply one of Willow and Xander's cutest moments. Although sinister in nature and not really a part of the episode, I love Anya's description of the real Santa Claus. Tara: "But the reindeer part was nice"

The mock fight between Will and Xander is a very endearing and heart warming moment. I had forgotten about the beginning where Anya explains about the real Santa Claus - funny stuff. Given the nature of this episode, it is really nice to see the scoobies in happier times, spending a holiday together. I know Joss' real reason for including that scene was just to get the credits out of the way, but still it added a nice touch to the episode and made Joyce's death that much more heart wrenching. I think it was needed though. It was good to see a nice mother/daughter moment between Buffy and Joyce. with Giles there, too. They were all a family. It is both happy, and heartbreaking at the same time.

The whole beginning with just Buffy was great. As well as the Anya speech, but the part that gave me the chills of sadness the most was when Buffy told Dawn. For some reason it was just downright a horrible feeling for me when you couldn't hear them and you saw all the students watching. Dawn breaking down was and falling to the floor was very sad. That's a very realistic interpretation of what someone her age would do.

Yeah. I think the fact that we couldn't hear what was being said but could only see Dawn's reaction, made the whole thing that much more heartbreaking.

I'd have to say Buffy's first scene is the saddest. Especially when she says "Mommy". So heartbreaking.

It's pretty much impossible to pick just one scene in this episode, so I'll go with my top 3 saddest. 1) "WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO MOVE THE BODY!!!" Buffy's face after realizing that her mother is no longer there is absolutely, completely heartwrenching. (Also the classic "Mom? Mom? ...Mommy?) 2) When Buffy tells Dawn that Joyce died, and she collapses to the ground sobbing while her whole class watches. Then it focuses on her sketch... argh, I'm getting teary just thinking about it. 3) Anya's speech is a given. Actually, the whole dorm room scene with Willow freaking out and Tara trying to console her and Xander getting all punchy with the wall... sigh.

I just watched this the other day and a moment that I don't think anyone's mentioned yet got me on the verge of tears. When they're all in the hospital and Anya suddenly blurts out "I wish Joyce hadn't died! She was nice ... and now we all hurt." It's so sad, cause she's trying to be supportive, but it's hard for her to do. And she sums up the whole feeling of everyone so simply.

I agree. Her awkwardness in delivery but obvious sincerity is really touching at that moment. Buffy clearly appreciates it as well, which I think is nice.

The fantasy that Joyce is saved when the paramedics arrive really gets to me. Cuz at first, it's like "yeah, she's alright!" and then the scene moves too fast, so you know it's too good to be true... then they cut back to reality. It's realistic because I know I would definitely clutch for miracles.
Also, this line:
"I have to lie to make you feel better." - the doctor

The worst part for me is definitely the beginning scene, especially when she slowly looks at her mother and realizes that she's not moving at all. When she says "Mommy?", I just start bawling like a little girl; it just sets off some reaction in me. Dawn finding out is absolutely horrible and so sad, and when she breaks down it's just heart wrenching. This episode is just so dang sad.

The entire episode was completely devastating but Anya's speech is what brought me to tears when I watched it the first time. It just brought all that you were feeling to the surface! Gah, I haven't seen this episode in so long! I think the second saddest scene for me was when Buffy told Dawn that Joyce was dead. The way they shot that was genius and heartbreaking at the same time.

Interestingly, Anya's speech didn't reach me the way it did so many people -- I think maybe because, although I do like the Anya character, she never really resonated with me all that much.
The two moments that come immediately to mind are:
1) The scene with Willow, Tara and Xander getting ready to go to the hospital and Willow freaking out about what to wear. Partly because it's such an un-Willow thing to worry about, so it ends up speaking to the incredible depth of Willow's feeling for Buffy -- her overpowering drive to be whatever Buffy needs right now. And also because, as I'm sure has been said many times before, if a character played by Alyson Hannigan is crying, chances are everybody within a 20-foot radius is crying too.
2) Buffy and Dawn in the art room. Not when Buffy tells Dawn and Dawn breaks down, but the moment just before Buffy pulls her out of class -- Buffy watching Dawn innocently chatting with her friends, knowing that she's about to bring her sister's world crashing down. I can imagine Buffy desperately wanting to postpone the moment and let Dawn stay in ignorance just a few minutes longer, and the burden of being the one who has to deliver the news taps into the ongoing theme of Buffy's loneliness and isolation.

I thought the saddest part of this episode was the scene in Willows dorm. The very begining of the scene to the very end. Willow feeling like she had to change, strong like an amazon, and Anyas little break down, Xanders hand through the wall.
All very sad. Other than that it would be Buffy telling Dawn at her shcool.

Anya's speech is what did it for me... so heart wrenching cause how do you explain death... really... how do you try to explain to someone the grieving process...some one is running around with a banner I love with the speech and her... I can't remember who though...

First act. Buffy's reaction. The saddest is by far when she calls her mom "the body."
