I have a bad feeling that this issue will be the less-awesome issue of this arc. It seems they are trying to explain two things in this issue. -Oz's past, trying to fill us in on his full story, or most of it. -Getting all the characters to interact with one another. I think the issue will start with all main characters in a room together discussing tactics, or what has happened with this whole Twilight thing, with Oz. I'm sure Oz will be all like "So...how've you all been." Buffy: Dead. Willow: Gay and/or Evil. Xander: Pirate or Watcher, dunno. Giles: Busy. Faith: Five by Five. Dawn: ...and you are?? I can just picture it. I think Oz will be narrating the issue most, so we can understand how he feels about all the characters, and maybe, just maybe, he's found a girlfriend at the temple, or someone he truly loves. Either way, can't wait.

There was some interesting imagery in these two preview pages.
The tea, obviously. He's holding a cup of tea which smashes in his hand when he wolfs out, completely unable to control his transformation. Then, when he's in his cage, the girl (Bay?) brings him another cup of tea and sits down to meditate with him.
It looks like they're using that tea as a focus... don't avoid the problem, but keep trying to master it. Keep trying until you can hold that cup of tea in your human hand while the full moon is in the sky.
Also, in the final panel you'll notice that Oz, in his cage, is backgrounded with darkness while the girl is backgrounded with an image of the rising sun. That seems to symbolize not only where the two of them are mentally at this moment, as well as foreshadowing what Bay might be to Oz... his sunrise. It may mean a new start in his life after conquering the wolf, or the start of a life together for the two of them, or both.
ETA: Xander and Dawn are also drinking tea on the cover. Which is also interesting, if the tea is symbolic of new beginnings.

I think the tea may also be symbolic of recapturing their humanity. Just as Oz is trying to recapture his humanity by becoming less wolfy, Buffy and the Slayers are looking to become less magic-y. And really, isn't recapturing their humanity what's needed? Because they're set apart from humanity currently. But they are going a bit too far in the opposite direction.

I notice they've done away with the usual Page One format here... the black page with the title and credits and the single panel at the bottom. Must be they had too much story to waste that much real estate in this issue. Not sure if they got rid of it. Some of the previews haven't always started with the first page, or we get it later on. I remember the first Swell preview we got started with Kennedy dropping down after zapping the "oh crap" demon. It'd suck if they got rid of it. I always thought the first page was pointless and was a waste of a page (why not put the credits on the inside cover?), but it'd be annoying if they just got rid of it more than halfway through. This preview definitely doesn't start with the first page because the box that says "I need help..." or whatever, is carried over from a parallel conversation taking place on the previous (unseen) page. The Oz (or present/three years later Oz ) we see in the preview is not saying that line.

Is this flashback set prior to New Moon Rising?
I haven't watched the Willow/Oz arc for a while, but I think Oz told Willow about his trip to Romania then Tibet when he came back to Sunnydale in that episode.
The Oz likeness could be improved, but the layout is nice. I've noticed when Georges' is working on a schedule, the likeness of the characters seems to suffer. I would rather have another artist pencil Brad Meltzer's arc, and give Georges' more time to work on Joss' last arc for this reason. The writing so far is good, considering Oz is such a laconic character, he seems to be translating quite well to the comic medium, that dialogue sounds very Oz-ish.

Dawn knows who Oz is. Why does everyone not know that?

People forget. When was it mentioned that Dawn know about Oz? How could she not know Oz?? He was part of the gang for three years!! Even as the little sister she must have seen him hang out with Buffy's friends!

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe she only thought of him as "Dude with orange hair who hangs out with my stupid sister." when she was a kid, which only means she recognizes him, not knows him.
Or maybe Buffy was very very private about her friends and told Dawn zero. It's not like Dawn and Buffy seemed to have been that closed.
And Oz and Buffy only seemed to mostly hang out in school, patrols and the Bronze, places where Dawn weren't allowed to go and would therefor never see Oz.
Or maybe Willow likes to share her lovelife with Dawn and she has recently found out about Oz.
I won't assume anything, but I guess Nicholas has proof that Dawn knows.

Well, in the comic "False Memories", we see flashbacks of Dawn's role in seasons 1-4. She helps Xander revive Buffy in "Prophecy Girl" and gets captured by Angelus in the hallway in "Innocence". I know it's not canon, but I like to think Dawn was friends with the Scoobies. Going by the comics continuity, she knows about vampires, demons, etc since before coming to Sunnydale so it makes sense she would try and get involved with the Scoobies' activities.

It's kind of a joke about Dawn not knowing who Oz is. Oz and Cordy are the only ones of the original core group who weren't around when Dawn poofed into being and got retconned. I know the retcon means that Oz knows Dawn/Dawn knows Oz. But, yeah, so... not too funny the way I tell it. lol
But... I don't know, Oz has always operated on a whole different level when it comes to intuition and perception, it'd be interesting if he could sense that she doesn't actually belong in the timeline. I don't think it'll come up, though.

Its pretty obvious based on continuity that Dawn and Oz would know eachother, simply because Oz would also have fake memories of Dawn as well, just like everybody who would have ever come into contact with her. Even some random guy walking past her on the street would have a fake memory of it, simply because thats what the monks did. Why would they change peoples memories, yet leave people like Oz or Cordy alone? That could be a huge problem. Besides, Faith and Dawn never actually met, yet they completely knew eachother and had history in Dirty Girls.

I definitely don't like the imagery of Bay and Oz sharing a cup of tea, and then Xander and Dawn sharing a cup of tea. Too much in way of shippy connotations. I think dany5by5 is right, this pre-scene takes place before New Moon Rising -- From transcript of Episode 4-19 New Moon Rising found at www.twiztv.com/scripts/buffy/season4/buffy-419.htm.The timeline has an interesting implication: that he met Bay before he went back to Sunnydale. He originally chose Willow over Bay, only to be rejected. Bay was his second choice. [EDIT: This is only applicable if Bay and Oz are indeed an item, which has been pointed out to me as unconfirmed as of yet.] Good catch, Andrew, on the background and symbolism of the rising sun and darkness. I'll hold off on making symbolic connections of tea just yet, simply because of the cover with Xander and Dawn.

Oh my God, I just realized... Oz's last girlfriend was Willow... and his current girlfriend is Bay... Joss is trying to tell us that Willow Bay is the key to everything!

Hey, just to make sure about something; was it ever established for sure that Bay would play a love interest? From what I remember of Jeanty's Q&A, Jeanty just mentioned basing a female (presumably) character on Dichen Lachman, but I don't remember ever reading about what her role was in the arc.
