The Girl in Question wins for that. *bow down to The Queen of All Black People* I can't say for sure that I've ever seen genuine homophobia... but then, I went to the only liberal-leaning high school in the state (Arkansas has many fine qualities, but progressive action is generally not among them) so I was friends with a good portion of gay teens in the area. It was pretty amazing - they gave me a whole new outlook, not just on sexual preference, but sex and relationships in general. I wish more people could have that in their teen years, because it's generally accepted that the teen years are tough for everybody - double that for every "strike" against you in society's eyes (homosexuality, race, even gender - the number of people I almost punched in high school over gender issues...).

Okay, I am gay and worry about things like this also, but I dont let it get the worst of me. There are many openlu gay people in my town and alot of gay rights supporters and ofcourse haters, but its like that everywhere. You should always think on the brighter side of things and see that in many countries this is infact dwindling out, although not all of them. Take a look at this: www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/nov/29/uganda-death-sentence-gay-sexAs I said, the UK and US will never go back to that, at least I hope not

My dad's really homophobic. I guess he's old-fashioned or whatever; he's just conditioned to think that way. It's funny catching him making stupid statements and not really realising how much of an arsehole he sounds. I'm glad my generation is far more liberal, even if it doesn't apply to everyone. I just wish I could stop using "gay" as the derogatory term.

I have democratic beliefs for a reason. I, personally, love everybody. I don't mean to go all Anne-of-Green-Gables-y on you guys, but I think everybody deserves equal rights. Sorry about your "incident". My biological family is incredibly homophobic, and they didn't want me living in the same house because I didn't think the same things they did (I live with my aunt, now). I live in Manhattan, and I really love it because it's such an open and accepting community (and a large chunk is LGBT-oriented) And some kid at my school got all mad and stuff because someone said that he was gay, and I had to give him this whole freakin' lecture on how being gay isn't something to be embarassed abouyt, even if you aren't. That's why I don't get offended when people talk about me like that. I think we should elect GaGa as president. GaGa~Vampyr

^^ Kudos on the "Anne of Green Gables" reference.
Sorry to hear that your family forced you out, however. That's awful.

that really is awful. that's also a big fear of mine, that when ever i do come out to family and friends, my parents wouldn't accept me and kick me out or do something like that. I don't think they are the type of people that would do that, but you never know. I remember my dad made a reference to gay marrige and how that gay people can be together, but they don't have to get married. which really got me upset.

I have a teacher who's majorly homophobic. It doesn't really affect me cause I'm straight, but it makes some of my gay friends really upset, even though she doesn't target people individually. It's more like this: She's one of the drama production directors, and in any scene where there are two girls or two guys who are friends, and they hug or seomthing she's always like "No, that's too gay." In West Side Story, our current production, there's a moment where Maria and Anita are holding hands while they sing about their respective lovers. This teacher yelled that it "looked too lesbian" and got in a big fight with the other teachers about it. Luckily, she lost

Sorry to hear about your unforunate incident. Not to long ago, my best girl friend, who is bi, and I encountered something like this with an elderly man. My friend is a very sensitive person. That's when my instincts rushed in, standing up for her like she was my sister, I began yelling back. We eventually walked away.
I understand racism because you actually have a reason, but homophobia? Really? It's not like it's going to spread to you. It's not a diease, it's a characteristic that makes a person who they are. It's one of the many reasons what makes that person so great.

I understand racism because you actually have a reason, but homophobia? How on earth does racism have a reason? It is exactly the same as homophobia, people being afraid of people that are different with no control over what makes them different. If you have legit reasons for racism, please, I'd love to hear them.

It's one of the many reasons what makes that person so great. I must admit that this posting upsets me. Racism is maybe the least reasonable form of discrimination/resentment of all. It is not absurd to say that the genders are different somehow and therefore may be treated differently; sexual orientation has something to do with what people do and how they love; but "race" is completely without meaning and implication. It is morally neutral. Racism has no rational basis whatsoever, fullstop. And mind you, I am not arguing that homophobia can be justified (I'm a lesbian myself) or that sexism is legitimate. No way. P.S. The fear of homosexuality spreading was exactly the reason why same sex sex acts were forbidden for such a long time.

That is just outrageous and has actually made me quite angry It is just unacceptable in this day and age (and even before this day and age) that people can think that same sex relationships/marriages/parents are wrong. What gives someone the right to look down at someone else for any reason of sex preference, or skin colour for that matter (and how on earth anyone could 'justify' disliking someone for their nationality is completely beyond me).

I'm just saying someone who is racist has a more legit reason. Take Eva from the movie Freedom Writers. She hates white people because they took her father away for, what she claimed, because they wanted to. While someone who is homophobic just has a crazy reason.

I am very sorry to hear what you went through SlayerComma. Do your family talk to you now? They should be ok with it. Sometimes my dad says homophobic stuff when he see's a gay storyline on soap shows. But he had no problem with my orientation when i told him. Even though he reckons that one day I'll turn straight, which is absolutely bullshit. Even my doctor said that to me. I haven't told my mum because she suffers from depression and she will get very upset and i'm sure my grandparents would be well upset. I've come out to my dad but i don't see myself coming out to anyone else apart from my therapist because i don't see myself finding anyone to love at all. The type of guy i want is impossible to just find.

While someone who is homophobic just has a crazy reason. Homophobia can be started by a understandable reason. A person who is raped by someone of the same sex can develop homophobia, without being crazy(to start with).
