Today I was on the bus going back home from work and some black guy was on the bus, while i was listening to music on the bus, i could hear the guy talking with a deep voice and it sounded like he was using homophobic words. I am fed up of people using homophobic words every day and i am always panicking in case i might get some abuse which i have had in the past. How the hell are guys supposed to come out gay or bi when stupid shit like this is going on. What is happening in this world now? Is homophobia increasing or decreasing because i'm sure it's supposed to be decreasing but there's not enough evidence of that in Wolverhampton or Birmingham. However, i was watching a show in the UK called the Wright show, and on there was a guest from America who supports homosexuality and she stated that the UK doesn't have what we have in America. I'd like to come out about my orientation one day and there's no way i can come out like this.

So sorry to hear you have been upset today by this. I would like to think that this kind of attitude and behaviour is dwindling out, but unfortunately there will always be some shallow minded and dispicable people around, whether it is to do with homophobia, or other things that should not be acceptable in our society, such as anti-social beahviour and crime.
I have not experienced much homophobia in my life to be honest, so I am not an expert, but I do know that unfortunately some people still do not accept everybody's right to their own life. A few of my close friends are gay, and I have never even thought about it, it is just as normal to me as anything else. It is just who they are, the same as me being straight is who I am. As my Dad has always said to me since I was a little girl, as long as I am happy and I am not hurting anyone else, he doesn't mind what I am or what I do.
As I said earlier, I haven't experienced much homophobia, but almost every day I see something that makes me feel disguisted with society. Whether it is groups of kids hanging out on the streets shouting abuse and intimidating others, or the rudeness of others, society today leaves a lot to be desired.
Don't let the petty mindness of others put you off expressing who you are. I know that it is easy for me to say, but the people who actually mean something to you will accept everything that you are, and don't let anyone else matter to you.

What a coincidence! Just as i made this thread i found out that there was a programme on in the UK on channel 3 today called Are you afraid of being gay? Did anyone see it. I watched the first half and it was terrible because on there they said that hate crimes on gay people have been increasing a lot. I was sad when i heard this. My mum just kept telling me to come downstairs and eat your dinner and watch eastenders which made me feel even worse because there is a gay character on the show who took an overdose and his mother visits him in the hospital and says that this disease you've got is horrible and you are better off dead. Seriously, in what frickin bizarro world did i just wake up in?

Is homophobia increasing or decreasing because i'm sure it's supposed to be decreasing but there's not enough evidence of that in Wolverhampton or Birmingham. I think there's your problem right there. Birmingham (I'm assuming you're talking about Birmingham, Alabama) is not exactly known for it's tolerence. Quite the opposite actually. I know a lot of people who are afraid to even visit there. Not just gay people, either.

^^Oh, sorry! Lol. I thought you meant Birmingham, Alabama, which is infamous for some very bad things.
I'm from San Francisco, and people call that the gay capital of the world, so homosexuals have it pretty good here for the most part. Santa Cruz is not too far away, and that's the supposed lesbian capital of the world. There's a lot of celebrations and events for gay rights here, and there's many stores and shops that have homosexuals as their demographic. Plus there's the Castro in San Francisco, which is a whole community that caters to homosexuals. And there's rainbow flags displayed for gay pride all over the place.
However, that does not go for the rest of the country. Most of the country is actually surprisingly anti-gay. The proof is in the pudding because homosexuals still aren't allowed to marry in most states. I can only think of two that actually allow it, and California (home of both homosexual capitals) is not even one of them. I know homosexuality is very frowned upon in a lot of non-major cities (i.e. nowhere towns) down south and in the mid west. Heck, a lot nowhere towns in any state are pretty gay intolerant.

I'm not really too keen to go to san fransisco, I like to go somewhere in America where homosexuality is ok. I'm not too bothered about gay marriage however i know that a lot of states don't allow it yet because it's always hard to make these things happen i believe. But i just need to know that me coming out one day will be good for me and i don't want to put up with homophobic slurs and i definately don't want to get attacked or murdered for it and i keep thinking that day could end up coming judging by the amount of homophobia in the uk.

I'm from the NYC area and the people here are pretty open-minded, but like TGIQ said, it's not really typical of the rest of the country. I just went upstate to the Albany area, and it was major culture shock to me, and I wasn't even that far from home. Such is what happens when there is a lack of diversity. I think when people aren't open to other ways of living, they just shut themselves off and become incredibly closed-minded. That said, I generally feel safer around collegetowns, and larger cities--wherever there's a diversity of people. But i just need to know that me coming out one day will be good for me and i don't want to put up with homophobic slurs and i definately don't want to get attacked or murdered for it and i keep thinking that day could end up coming judging by the amount of homophobia in the uk. I want that day to come soon too-- no one should feel unsafe in their own skin, or be threatened for their sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and the color of their skin. This is one of the things that bothers me the most about the world.

It seems to me the more liberated we are the more bigoted we get.I used to live near Birmingham many years ago and it was very bigoted then as regards to sexuality and race. We have laws against these sorts of behaviours but laws can't make people think any differently, it comes down to education and learning tolerance. I once thought that it was the older generation that thought the way these people do, but I'm a part of that generation and we appear to be more tolerant and the younger people with the big chips on their shoulders. For me personally I don't care about a person's sexuality or their race, it is the person themselves that counts.

Drusillacakes is right. Any major/large city in the US is pretty homosexual friendly. So the Bay Area in California, the LA area in California, Miami in Florida, the NYC area, Houston in Texas, etc. Was it really necessary to tell us he was black? That's a very good point.

I really can't stand it anymore either. i mean, it's hard enough to deal with the fact that saying 'That's so gay' is ok. Because honestly, it's offensive. I would just like people to just stop being afraid of people that are different from you.

I'd love to think that homophobia is decreasing in where I live, (which is Orange County, California) but I remember when I figured out I liked girls and I hated myself and believed that I should never tell anyone. My family is pretty liberal and open-minded, but still I felt like I was a freak. It was horrible, and so that's why I want to go into Gay Rights activism when I'm older, so the bigotry in areas like albany and Louisiana stop treating the LGBT community like a social pariah.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're scared of coming out. It's a pretty horrible world we live in sometimes.
I live in Australia and haven't really encountered homophobia, but I did grow up in Canberra, which, despite being the capital city, is quite small and easy going. I had a few gay friends when I was in high school and none of my friends or my immediate family have any problems with gay people. However, I have Jehovah's Witnesses as extended family, and they're quite homophobic but they like to hide behind the religious angle. REALLY pisses me off. I hate that people are discriminated against simply because they are attracted to members of the same sex. I wish we could live in a world without discrimination.
Speaking of, I kind of agree with Eric's post - why did you feel it necessary to explicitly say that the man on the bus was "black". You could have just written "a man on the bus." I mean, if it had been a white guy, would you have written "a white guy"?

I'm so sorry about writing black in my write up. I was rushing when i was typing, i was actually going to mention that he was Jamaican and i seem to hear a lot of homophobic abuse from them because i had some abuse a few weeks back as well, but thats not always the case, it can come from anyone.
I'm so sorry!!!!!
