I have high hopes for this. I wouldn't say great, but I think it would be cool if somewhere during this series maybe in the last issue, if they ran into Angel to clear the air considering this is partially his book. But even if they didn't this series looks like it will be good just exploring illyria and gunn.
I liked the bit where the demons actually knew illyria by name. Maybe it was from hell-A.

I agree with Pat, very strong start indeed!
I was really impressed with how well Lobdell had a grasp on Gunn and Illyria. The back story describing past events was a bit heavy handed, since everyone reading this mini-series will already know what has happened, and that was really the only weak part about this issue.
The story set up was great and it all flowed really well, from Gunn and Illyria working well as a team, to their various conversations that really expanded on Illyria's development in After the Fall, traveling to the Burkle's and then setting up some mystery at the end with these demon's.
For a first issue and new writer (although not new to the Buffyverse), very impressed. Illyria and Gunn are not easy characters to grasp, and despite one issue with one of Illyria's lines ("It is the one called Wesley"), it was all pretty great. Illyria and Gunn are an odd team, but Scott has already given them some great scenes together in just one issue.
I'm also not sure how I feel about Illyria not completely changing into Fred. She has to act like her, so why not just change into her all the way? I don't have an issue with Roger and Trish accepting it, but I dunno, it's a bit odd. Maybe Illyria just wants to see if she can balance herself (appearance) and Fred (behavior), so she doesn't have to give into being Fred completely. Now that I think about it like that, it's kinda cool.
This being a 5-issue mini will really allow Scott to spread stuff out, which is already apparent in this issue with some of the lighter moments.
Messina rocks, as always. I love how he draws Illyria, and his likenesses for both Illyria and Gunn were consistent throughout (except for Gunn's facial hair, which Pat mentioned). Really happy he is back with Angel.
I wonder if Illyria will narrate issue 2 (and 4?) and Gunn will narrate issue 1, 3 and 5? It will be neat to get inside Illyria's head, if she does narrate.
Very successful first issue.

hmm I am very warry about this. I don't want to jump back onto the angel comic wagon and be mislead into thinking they are good stories. I was all for Angel, old friends, curse etc...now they are considered as "nothingness" in the verse. So how does all of this fit into After the fall? How many issues is it. Is this set duting aftermath. Why did Brain write that one issue about Illyria ad Gunn setting off in the car, issue 23?? and now there is a new writer? Is it all the same story.

Well from what I understand, this miniseries officially spins out of Angel #23. And since After the Fall is considered canon, it means the rest of the series is canon. So since it's concurrent with a canon series, I'm sure Only Human is canon too...
I like to think that Aftermath and Only Human take place at the same time.

Brian wrote #23 as an "Epilogue" to After the Fall, partially to give an extra cap to the bottled (and awesome) story that is AtF, and partly to help inspire the new writers to continue with the idea (that is speculation; I imagine Brian himself will swing by soon and tell you the truth, because I am a filthy liar ). After Brian finishes this run on Angel (I believe he's writing up to Angel #27), he'll be going to the Spike on-going series. I'm going to the comic shop tomorrow, hopefully to pick this up as well as the Dru issue.

Only Human spins out of #23 Become What You Are just like Spike: After the Fall spins out of his First Night story in Angel: After the Fall #7. Easiest way to look at it.

Canon's totally up in the air with everything post-AtF at this point. To say that something branching off from it is automatically canon would mean, essentially, all the old Buffyverse novels and comics are canon as well. It's all grey area at this point as far as the IDW line goes. Frankly I'm taking the "Everything to come sinse AtF is only canon if you want it to be, but don't be upset if it ever gets trumped by something 'official" train of thought towards them.

I liked this issue a lot. There was a lot of funny parts . Like when the dog was growling at Illyria and she just told it to stop. Is this the first time since "shells" that she had on a different outfit on? Illyria wearing a baseball cap classic.

This was some good stuff. I was really happy that we finally got some real post Lynch-After the Fall development of the characters. Scott Lobdell definitely did the series, Gunn, and Illyria justice. Great writing, but there wasn't really much to the issue, plot wise. The cliffhanger was great though, and I'm hoping this is where The Scourge come in.
Gunn's inner thoughts were very in-character and I enjoyed reading where his head was at and how he is coping. It was awesome seeing Roger and Trish again, they are so cool. Illyria's development is also very interesting, wanting to witness a funeral and seeing how the other half lives, a lot of neat things can come out of that. But I really do hope Lobdell goes further with why she didn't take on Fred's appearence, that left me scratching my head.
David Messina's art was amazing. That two page spread of Illyria and Gunn walking away from the explosion was some of the best Angelverse art yet.

I agree with the explosion art being awsome. It comes second Imo only to the scene in ATf 16 where they say cue the music and they're walking together.

Very enjoyable 1st issue. Loved the connection to Atf. I was happy when I read recently that there is an Angel "bible" at IDW, and I was very reassured by this. And this comic reassured me even more so. Even these 'spinoff' issues will take from what has gone before and hopefully add to what is to come and make sure that was has gone before matters.
Story was excellent, and the voices were spot on. The only misstep was when Illyria said "the named Wesley"...dont think she would have said that. Great to see Trish and Rodger again. Very assured debut.Really looking forward to the next issue now

I want a Hedon Demon of my very own. Me too, man. Me too. Just read the issue today. I loved it. Although I wished Illyria transformed into Fred before meeting "her" parents. Was she hot in those outfits or what? lol. David Messina is at the top of his game in this arc. Very well done.

Well, like I said on another post, I don't consider anything without Joss Whedon's involvement canon. So other than the After the Fall story, I consider nothing else from IDW canon. Also, the idea that Only Human has continuity with After the Fall is very ideal and likely since it's all rooted from the same circle of people that brought us After the Fall. I mean, why spend the time and money to produce Only Human if it's going to be contradicted by the main series later on? So merr. I just read it, enjoy it, and be done with it.

I just read this issue, and I was blow away. This really feels like the true sequel to After the Fall(unlike Aftermath).
I really like how Illyria did not turn all the way back into her Fred form. I like when she changed outfits, it was nice to see her wearing something else besides her body armor. She looked pretty when she wore that dress for a second.
I also like the way that Gunn react's to Illyria.
All in all a nice start to Only Human. I give this issue a 9/10.

I really enjoyed this issue as well. I always liked Illyria's interactions with Wesley and Gunn the best so this mini arc is a real treat. I picked up Epilogue and Only Human #1 not knowing they were canon (or if not canon, linked to the ATF story). Not too long ago I finished Angel ATF #4 HC and forgot there was even an aftermath, so I bought these two issues just for fun. But now that I know it actually ties in with the aftermath, it makes me happy! :3 I'm not a huge fan of the art, though. While I do respect it and feel it is well done, the style just isn't for me. Plus I think Illyria's boobs are drawn way too large. Fred/Illyira was a very thin (and frankly flat chested) girl. It'd be nice to stick to her frame. Anyway, I can't wait for the next issue!
