I think that puts an unfair onus on the other person, who can judge how drunk another person is and what's going on in their head? But maybe this is a discussion for another topic

I think that there was some teenage boy present in the attempted rape. It wasn't as if it was just the hyena in his body following mating instincts. I think there was a little bit of maliciousness and reasoning, if you could call it that, behind the attempted rape.
Sure, Xander is a nice guy, and would never actually try to rape Buffy while not possessed, but I think that the hyena was probably acting of Xander's buried desires. It's not like he tried to rape Willow, right?

It's not like he tried to rape Willow, right? It is acting on Xander's desires, but that's not the point. The point is that it's not Xander's fault and he doesn't need to apologize. Xander could have raped Buffy in BB&B when he had the chance, but didn't.
