I wonder if "the Gate" means something more than just a fence. Could Tokyo be some center of mystical activity as well?? That's a good theory. I'm really excited for this arc, I love Drew Goddard. I can't wait for the Scoobies to kick some vampire ass. They haven't done that for a long time.

personally I love this front cover. both of them.
I love the buffy with the mystical swirly hair. looks really cool.
also people seem to be debating about whether or not we are dealing with vamp crossbred with wolves but it looks to be fairly obvious as the female vamp seems to have a paw for a hand. theres 3 paws onthe front cover. Two of them could be the wolves but there seems to be a third where her hand would be.
Cant WAITTTTTTTTTTTTTT for this arc. I think its gonna be the best. I wasnt impressed with the faith arc at all so I think this one will beat it.

I LOVE both covers, they are so AWESOME!!! I hope Oz comes in this comic, and it would be awesome if the kept him as a regular for the rest of season 8. It would be nice to see Oz back and it could be possible seeing as how he was traveling the world. The only thing about Oz coming back that I don't want is Willow saying she isn't a lesbian anymore and getting back together with him. Willow is gay. Period exclamation point. Any deviation from this fact will result in much rioting. Seriously, though, Joss has the sense not to put Willow and Oz back together, I'm certain.

I just want Willow and Oz to talk and catch up. Willow has been through so much since they knew each other it would be very interesting, I think they could be good friends. Plus Oz was one of the coolest characters on Buffy in my opinion. I was sad when he left, but it had to happen.

You've been finding Jo's art "boring" as of late? Faith in the fire is boring? Are you INSANE? hahaha It's beautifully rendered, but her work is pretty static. Exactly. Most, if not all, of her covers had static poses. The exception really is Anywhere But Here, which apparently is her least liked cover. The thing I liked about her on Runaways was that she almost always painted the characters in dynamic poses, sometimes painting a scene from within the book itself. She did that once with the Buffy comics and no one really liked it. It's good that Jo is taking a break from Buffy, because her covers were getting progressively worse. I think she needs a breather. When (or if) she comes back, she'll hopefully have more original ideas, and be able to breathe some life into her art. Jon is a fantastic illustrator, and his work is compositionally delightful. He's going to do Buffy good, I know it.

I agree, Jo Chen's covers are the only thing that got me back into the comics!

I too have loved all of Jo's covers. I don't think the 1st issue of Wolves at the Gate holds up to ANY that Jo has done...A Beautiful Sunset does...but not WatG...I was very dissapointed in that cover.

That's utterly ridiculous, Jo Chen has been getting better and better. Faith in the fire? [censored!]ing BRILLIANT. Willow and Buffy flying through the air? BEAUTIFUL. I think Jo's work has been incredible from the beginning. Okay... you did read my post, right? It's not that her covers aren't pretty. They are. But that's about all. They're just pretty pictures. You're right, Jo did go out with a bang, but I think she needs a break from Buffy. I'm, personally, tired of her covers, and I want to see someone else have a go. That's how comic books go, cover artists are switched out a lot. We need to get used to it.

I look at all of the covers, except Wolves at the Gate, as real works of art. I don't like the typical cartoon-y look of issue 12's cover.

The tension created there surpasses anything Jo did. Not totally in love with this cover, but it's no worse than any other so far. It'll probably make more sense in context. I look forward to seeing more from Jon; and then from whoever steps in next. Urgh. The term "Work of Art" gets thrown about too much for my liking. Lets not get silly about this. They're comic book covers.

You said "Let's not get silly about this. They're comic book covers". I think they're more than that, I think what Jo's done surpasses the comic book level. I think they're real works of art, and I'd be proud to have any of those be official posters for the show or a new Buffy movie. We can agree to disagree though. No you're intentionally missing the point. They ARE comic book covers. We don't agree to disagree, we agree you're being needlessly argumentative and foolishly picking a very simple and factual part of my post to respond to. About the quality of the covers themselves, yeah we can agree to disagree on that.

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but as a comic book geek I just feel like I have to say that "just a comic book cover" doesn't necessarily mean a piece of art isn't great. Seriously, "comic book" does not have to be synonymous with cheap, silly crap. I know that this isn't by any means what anyone meant to say, but it just sounded to me like comics were getting the brush-off as inherently worse than other forms of media.
Now back to our regularly scheduled program.
