A5 > A4 > B3 > B5 > A3 > A2 > B2 > A1 > B4 > B7 > B1 > B6

I'll never, ever understand the not-uncommon high rankings for Angel Season 1. Angel has always worked best in arcs, and its first season is just one tiresome standalone after another. My brother and the guy I'm dating both refuse to give the show a shot after watching it, despite my constant reassurances that it gets better.

The only problem I have with AtS Season 1 is "She." That's the only episode that's a struggle to get through for me. The rest of the season, imo, is still highly enjoyable.

That's exactly why I stopped watching Angel on a regular basis after they started to air Angel Season 1 because I couldn't stand the standalones. It was painful to think that every week there would be a complete new story told with nothing exciting that could lead to a great final arc. Just mini stories. Some entertaining, most of them boring. So I totally gave up on a show until I realized they brought back Darla, Drusilla and Faith and started to get darker over the years. Now I'm sure there's some good stuff for me to catch up with.

Angel really earned my respect. I tried to watch it as much as I could during its run but I really got into it on DVD. I know a lot of people hate season 4 but I love it. How can you not think the Beast is an awesome villian? I understand there were a few bad notes i.e. Cordy as the baddy and her with Conner. But they really did bring it full circle with Season 5 and ending on a really awesome message.
I personally think Season 1 is the worst season. I don't think the episodic detective angle worked as well as the drawn out arcs that came with the later seasons.
But overall. I think Angel was as good as Buffy. They are so different it is hard to compare the two. But also I think they also work so well as companion pieces.

Ick. I really didn't like season 4 at all, getting through the episodes is torture just to get to season 5. (I try not to skipp episodes in Ats). I agree that Buffy had a young appeal compared to Angel which I felt was on a whole more mature somehow. I like them for different reasons though. We get to see more layers to Angel and he becomes more of a hero in his own right, rather than in Buffy's shadow. On Buffy you get to grow with the characters much more. The episode with the german and submarines is absolute pants and I always skip that one. Love Smile Time

I voted for equal love. They both complement each other. I'm one of the strange people that loved Angel season four, it was just so dark. And Buffy season six and seven were personal favourites as well. The Angel/Cordy storyline didn't feel too strange to me, but I didn't love what they did to Cordy in season four, I think it worked thematically, just with it being such a dark season, but I really missed her, the quippy Cordy of season three who was mature but still fun.
I've been on an Angel binge lately, season three, which I forgot how strong it was.

The not-uncommon amount of high rankings for both Angel season 1 and season 5 disagree with the claim that Angel worked best in arcs. In fact, the arc heavy season 4 is normally the least popular season from what I've seen too. I liked Angel a little more than Buffy as a whole. If Buffy had stopped after season 5,it might have been different. So what you mean is that the two last seasons of BTVS were bad enough to spoil five excellent year of the show and make you change your opinion on it? I don't see the logics here. Like seasons 6 and 7 or not, but no matter how bad (or good) those seasons were, they're more like a bonus after five great years of entertainment. And to me the last two years continued to be amazingly entertaining. I would have missed out on Dark Willow and Funny Andrew for nothing in the whole world. It doesn't ruin the show, but it brings it's overall quality down; below that of Angel's, in people's opinions. Dark Willow was the most cringe-worthy thing in either show for me. Give me mexican wrestlers or fish people swimming team over that any day lol

Nup. Dark Willow was awesome enough to be reused in Season 8. From what I've seen, most people think Angel Season 5's standalones are weak, and rank it as high as they do for its arcs (Lindsey-Eve, Spike-Angel, Fred-Illyria, the Black Thorn). And re: Angel Season 4, I'd use the term "controversial" over "unpopular", as with Season 6 of Buffy.

Dark Willow was def the most disappointing pay off to a long running story for me. It'd been building since S2 and they ended up sh*tting the bed and turning it into an after school special about drug abuse. Don't get me started on the whole bad goth clothing/lame dialogue=Evil thing (same goes for Cordy).
Anyways, I like ranking things:
Buffy S2 Buffy S3 Angel S2 Angel S3 Angel S4 Buffy S5 Angel S1 Angel S5 Buffy S1 Buffy S4 Buffy S6 Buffy S7 (the only one I completely dislike)

Nup. Dark Willow was awesome enough to be reused in Season 8. I don't think Dark Willow being "awesome" was why she re-appeared in Season 8, but rather the fact that Willow is Joss' favorite character. I personally found Dark Willow cringe worthy and lame, as did a lot of other fans.

Well Scott Allie did say Joss has a fascination with Dark Willow, which is why he brought her back, so he must think she's awesome. I don't understand the dislike for Dark Willow, I thought she was right up there with the best Buffy baddies. Her fight with Giles was a classic moment in the series for me.

Yep. I mean, I had issues with the arbitrary apocalypse in Grave, but Dark Willow on her own was awsm.

In my opinion :
1. Dark Willow was more than awesome. I loved how they brought her to the edge! And the line she comes up with when talking to Buffy "I think every little inch of your butt needs to be kicked" or something like that. Legendary.
2. Still puzzled by the high rankings for Angel S1 too. Guys, who can tell me what was so awesome in that season? (besides the nice dynamic between the characters, Doyle's sacrifice, the Buffy episode and the Faith arc... wait now, that's a lot of good stuff there! but still, too many standalones)
3. Just started Angel S3... And I like what I'm watching so far!

Oh my God! I love Season 3 so far!! The fifth episode when Cordy and Wesley try to do the Buffy/Angel thing in front of Fred is PRICELESS. Oh Buffy I love you so much I even forgot to brood!

You're Welcome, Smile Time, Destiny, Damage, Origin... all standalones and probably healthy candidates for people's favourite episodes of the season. There are only two examples of episodic arcs in 5 that I can think of at all: A Hole in the World/Shells and Power Play/Not Fade Away. I don't get what you're getting at saying it was character development that people liked. They liked the standalone-heavy season regardless. I wouldn't use the term "controversial", cause those seasons are still the least popular. ;D

Your definition of "standalone" is probably different from mine. I was referring to MotW episodes like "Just Rewards" and "Unleashed" and "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco"; not episodes built on a previous central storyline ("You're Welcome") or introducing a new one ("Destiny"). I wouldn't use the term "controversial", cause those seasons are still the least popular. ;D Nnnnnnnot really. Season 4 may have the highest ranking in the "Worst Season" poll in this forum, but it's also got the second highest ranking in the " Best Season" poll. That would indeed mark it "controversial". (And if you frequent other forums besides SlayAlive, you'll know both that and Season 6 of Buffy generally get more appreciation there.)

Ok what is now with Angel in Season 3? I am straight, well kinda bi, but jeez they tried to make him all cute and... cute all of a sudden. He's like a big guy crying for affection and trying to be all human and considerate with everybody. When you watch the episodes you just want to give the guy a huge hug.
Sorry I am watching all the episodes I missed and that was just my random train of thoughts.
