Aly did a better job, but I think it's sad to see her critized for her weight. And yes, I have seen it.

I've seen it. Her weight is irrelevant, she just wasn't much of an actor. Willow's character simply has too many nuances, too many layers, and I don't think Regan would have ever pulled it off.

I've seen it and didn't much care for Willow in it. Her and Xander just didn't click at all. But it was quite hilarious when Xander was hiding behind her.

Riff could not have pulled off Dark Willow, had she stayed on the show

I think another reason why Riff wouldn't have worked it because although Willow was a bit nerdy I still thought she was sexy but with Riff I didn't find her sexy at all. Not because of her weight she just seemed a bit boring and I can't imagine her with Oz or Tara.

I am so glad they found Aly to play the part of Willow. IMO, this girl just wouldn't have fit as Willow at all. Alyson Hannigan, on the other hand, is the soul embodiment of Willow.

Yeah I saw this too. It was really weird. I didn't like Riff's acting, she really gave a bland and boring performance. Some of her reactions seemed to be delayed too, like the beginning scene with Nicky. He was good on his delivery there, but she dragged it out by too long of pauses. I had nothing against Riff's weight, it was her acting I was put off by. There's no way I could see her pulling off Dark Willow, or any emotions that Aly pulled off on the show.

Horrid.
Willow is the only character that makes my heart break when they cry and seeing Reagen's performance in the Unaired Pilot seriously makes me doubt her ability to make me feel this way. Alyson, obviously, can do this.
I wonder how she feels knowing she was in the crappiest portrayal of "one of the greatest shows of all time"...

I found the whole thing in one Windows Media file not too long ago and watched it unbroken. She's dreadful - flat, toneless, and dull. As someone said, no chemistry with anyone.
That said, it had its moments. Some dialogue that survived one or even two more shootings into the final product (the 'Time Life series' scene, I'm told, was reshot a third time after the season was complete), the terrific, totally casual flip from the second floor to the first in the library that ended up in The Bronze, and the terrific fight on the set of the school play that, sadly, was neverr reused.

Does the name Riff Reagan remind anyone else of the character Riff Randall from the movie Rock N Roll High School?

When I first saw the unaired pilot I was appalled. Of course I had heard that Aly wasn't the actress originally intended for Willow, but Regan was a huge disappointment as the character. She portrayed Willow extremely flatly and I didn't find her relate-able at all. I think the problem was mainly bad acting. I'm glad that Hannigan was eventually chosen.
I <3 my Aly.

I've purposefully not searched for the pilot. LOL.

What I think some people forget is that the unaired pilot was never suppose to be broadcasted. It was supposedly made really quickly and cheaply and it's only purpose was to give the people at Fox an idea of what the show was about. Willow hadn't been cast yet when they filmed this; Riff Reagan was a temporary fill in just for that one thing. They intended on looking for a different actress even before this pilot was shot. So with that in mind perhaps the actress didn't really give the performance her all. I agree, I didn't like her, her version of Willow was very one note and extremely boring, but Miss Reagan may have just not cared since she knew the part wasn't going to her anyway.

all actors give it there all when they have a job. Trust. Okay, I can see that. I'm not saying she was a great actress, obviously not considering she worked very little as an actress and eventually took a Human Resources job (got that from imdb.com), but I don't think anyone knows for certain what she was capable of other than her. I prefer to be happy that Aly got the part rather than spend time overly criticizing Riff Regan for not being as good. She played her part and obviously it was good enough to help Buffy get picked up by Fox which I personally think it all that matters.

Saw it, got so freaked out.. Aly is just what I'm used to when I see Willow, and even season 8 Willow was weird at the begging, but this is a horror, not because of the actress ( but still she is wrong for this part ) but because I'm just used to Aly

I've seen it, and I'm whatevers about it. By the time I saw it I had watched the whole series and grown attached to Aly in the role so I can't give a fair assessment. Ditto, the character would've been very different, but maybe I would've grown to love her as I grew to love Alyson..it's hard to say having become so attached to the actors in these roles. PS- great point dragonweaver, about the pilot being shot quickly without the goal of being aired.

I agree that Riff Reagan was a terrible actress who was unable to encompass the character. Recasting her was extremely wise.
Do you think that had she been a good decent actress, the network would still have asked the team to recast her with someone who's slender? Or was it solely an issue of her acting?
