Making fun of her weight just seems inappropriately jerky when there're so many other things about her to make fun of that have nothing to do with her appearance.

I think so many of us are biased in regards to Aly being Willow because for most of us, she's all we knew.
What if it had been the other way around and it was the actress from the pilot instead who regularly played Willow and Aly or someone else who was the pilot actress? Would we be saying things like this then?
I just confused myself...

Absolutely horrible choice for willow. I love the original Flutie though. He is Ned rierson from groundhogs day and Bob Bishop from Heroes

i haven't seen it, but would like too. although from the pic of her, I'm glad they found Alyson not saying she ugly or anything i just cant see willow being played by any one else. its like have Buffy but with someone else playing Buffy instead of Sarah. i have often had this discussion with people and they say who should of played a character and i can never think of any one else but them who play them it wouldn't be the same. like when it first came out that Buffy was ending and the rumor going around about holly valance playing Buffy, wouldn't of been the same i wouldn't have watched any more if that had happened would u?

I'm definitely glad they got Aly. However, I did find it odd that there wasn't an overweight main character. Since especially early on, one of the themes was that they were outcasts and not accepted by others.

The original Willow was really boring (so was the unaired pilot, even though it has some indie budget-less charm). It'd be cool to have a fat powerful lesbo witch around, but Alyson was born to play the crayon-breaker. ^^

I enjoyed seeing Riff as Willow for the same reasons I enjoyed seeing Kristy Swanson playing Buffy. Yes, it's weird, but it's interesting to see the characters in their early stages and how they were created. I also don't understand why some people were upset to see Willow played by Reagan... it's only the non-canon pilot, it's not like it actually matters. Riff Reagan's Willow was a stereotypical dorky girl and bully victim whereas Alyson Hannigan played Willow more optimistic and quirky. She lit up the screen and that's why we love her.

Nice girl but AH IS Willow, no ifs, no buts. The series wouldn't have been so successful if they'd kept her

She was ok. Alyson was beautiful and charming as Willow, but he had seven years to develop the character, Riff only had one, not very good, unaired pilot.

Call me vain, but I think the way Riff looks would have ruined Willow's character. I mean, can you really see a Xander/Willow relationship? Willow/Oz? Oh god, she's twice as big as Oz. And she would not look right with Tara either...ew.

I think it's silly to criticize her weight or make fun of her for it. The unaired pilot was just bad, all the way around, and that's about the sum of it. Nobody had chemistry, people were giving flat readings, the characters were even different. And I only watched like the first 15 minutes before I had to shut it off.
Now, I know I have real trouble wrapping my brain around the idea that Sarah might have actually gotten the Cordelia part, which is what she originally tried for. 0_o

Sarah as Cordelia: I don't have such a big problem with that - she played Catherine in Cruel Intentions, who is probably way richer and certainly way more evil than Cordy ever was, so she could have pulled off snappy rich bitch quite well i reckon.
Riff as Willow: The one thing that I think would have been lacking is Aly's amazing vulnerability. Joss says early on in the commentaries (on Prophecy Girl i think) that he knew from the beginning that he could just keep putting Willow in danger time and time again and the audience would really care for her. This isn't just something that Riff probably wouldn't have pulled off so well - it's something that 99% of actresses around wouldn't be able to pull off so well. That ability of Aly's gave Joss the license to continually endanger the character and make tears well in our eyes every time.

Perhaps I should rephrase: Sarah as Cordelia would mean someone else as Buffy. I can imagine a few actresses in the role, but Buffy's always gonna be Sarah.

I absolutely LOVE that almost everyone here says "not because of her weight" when infact it was totally about her weight.

I absolutely LOVE that almost everyone here says "not because of her weight" when infact it was totally about her weight. I thought this over and I honestly don't think her weight was the problem. Gertrude Yorkes from Runaways is a fat bitch and she's one of my favourite superheroines ever. Buffy was a subversive show and it might have been cool to have a fat lead character. I'm glad they cast Amber Benson as Tara, for example, rather than the "hot girl" Joss initally had in mind (Amber's not that fat though...). The problem wasn't Riff's weight at all, it was the fact she didn't have much personality or charm, which Alyson Hannigan has buckets of.
