I had never seen Buffy for more than 30 seconds while channel-surfing until maybe three months ago, when I started watching from the beginning on Hulu. I quickly got hooked, burned through the three seasons that Hulu had, and then bought the seven-season box set.
I do that with a lot of TV shows -- never watch it when it's on in first-run, then discover it later and go through several years' worth of episodes in a few months. It seems like it's much easier to get into a show that way than when I have to remember what time it's on...
(I think the first Buffy I ever saw was a snippet of a Season 7 episode when it was in first-run, because I vaguely remember a scene with Buffy coaching a bunch of girls in fighting techniques.)

I got into the show when season 6 was being shown...caught up with the previous ones by watching the reruns on the Space channel. That was when I became a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan I really liked it alot and the way the show was going.
