What is Hollywood's fascination with doing a set of 3 films all the time? It rarely works out... in fact I can't think of a third movie thats better than the ones before... or even just as good. Most 3's suck pretty hard.

I think the idea is that you can tell a broader story but I agree with you they it rarely works out. I think the best example EVER is The Matrix trilogy. The first one is damn near genious and the two sequels...they suck pretty hard. They are decent movies, I guess. I kinda enjoyed part 2. But in comparison to the first Matrix movie, they are GARBAGE!
Another example are the Pirates movies. All 3 are very good, imo, but none are as good as the first.
I think the reasin first movies in a trilogy are better is because they are usually made as staandalone movies where as the second and third movies usually rely on their predisessors.
One example of a trilogy that works is the Bourne trilogy!

I have never seen the Bourne trilogy but I've heard it's very consistant. I think the best movie Trilogy is the Lord of the Rings but it's different because it's based on a book trilogy and all 3 were made at once. I agree with the Matrix's 100%. The their credit, it IS a great story. The directors just absolutely failed at telling it.

#2 sucked, and I enjoyed #3 as much as the first, even though they were very different.
I didn't see any lower quality in the X-Men films or the Shrek movies.

X-Men 1 and 2 were good. 3 was a waste of time. They crammed way too many mutants into one movie. Shrek 1 and 2 were good, but 3 wasn't funny at all.

Shrek 3 was hilarious. I can't get over Snow White's song changing to Lez Zepplin or whatever it was. Maybe ACDC. IDK.

Hmmm. I agree with the Matrix example, but what about Spidey? I really enjoyed 1, 2 was, okay, but then 3 happened. And i was embarassed for tobey maguire. It was just like watching a car crash. Aggh. I love LOTR tho, well, when i cba watching all 3. I think Pete over did it with the third ending tho. All those blackouts. I held my breath waiting for an ending, and it carried on for like 20 mins! Another set i like is the Alien Quadrilogy I think the main reason we get trilogys, is striking while the irons hot. Run it while they can and make as much $$$. Pirates 2 & 3 were pretty much written for Johnny Depp. He owned Sparrow in the first film, but i think the character owned him in the other two. I've also read about alottttttt of films which had strong sequels planned, but company exec's just base the initial success as flukes. Guess it depends on where else the story can go. Disney is renowned for it. Little Mermaid 3, Cinderella 3. The movie industry is going reet down the pan.

I'm actually one of the few I know that actually enjoyed Spiderman 3, but it was substantially weaker than the others. Everyone seems to bash Sam Raimi for it nowadays but he literally made it with no script because the studio imposed a release date on them that they had to fulfill. I like the Alien quadrilogy DVD hehe, but I honestly never was a huge fan of the films. 1 is good but VERY dated; 2 is great, 3 is awful and 4 is awful. I can watch 4 because I liked it as a kid but it's pretty bad. THEN came Alien vs. Predator... urgh. What makes it worse is that back when AvP was greenlit James Cameron said he'd do an Alien 5 with Sigorney Weaver but only if AvP didn't happen. He knew crossing the films would be franchise murder and wouldn't do a film after

Shrek 3 was hilarious. I can't get over Snow White's song changing to Lez Zepplin or whatever it was. Maybe ACDC. IDK. you must be joking! shrek 3 was one of the worst sequels of all time. Ever. lol. I hated it with a passion. Lord of the rings and the bourne films are great trilogys but i think the main reason they both work so well is because they were both based on books and the authors of those books obviously had that idea in mind so panned them out nicely. I cant think of any generally successful trilogy, potc was okay but certainly not great. Scream 1/2 were awesome. The third was rubbish though. I think sin City has a good chance of being a good trilogy. i know they have a sequel planned out and im pretty sure a third is planned. If done correctly I think itll work.

Back to the Future was an awesome trilogy if you take out number 2! The third one is just as good as the first. Too bad the second one sucked so bad. Maybe if they didn't have Michael J. Fox playing every other character it would have been better. Oh, and the Indiana Jones trilogy was good. All 3 movies were very well done.

I'm not sure about Sin City. I'm not very well informed of the comics but I hear most of the material has already been tapped for the first film. It was good though so I'm looking forward to seeing 2. Sadly comic book films tend to comepltely flop by part 3 haha (Batman, Spiderman, Xmen, Blade all sucked by the third installment)
I can shamefully admit that I don't think I've ever seen a whole Indy Jones film in my life :$
I think Die Hard is a very strong film series personally. 4 was great.

The original Star Wars trilogy is easily the best trilogy ever, imo. Lord of the Rings is a close second.

Don't stake me, but I found LotR very boring. Fell asleep through the first one the first couple times I tried to watch it. I have seen them all, but they just aren't my movies when usually they would be. I just really don't know why.
I've seen the first 2 Die Hards, still need to see the last 2, but the first 2 were really good.
I like what Terminator did with its trilogy. Setting each one so far from the first. T2 is just as good, if not better, than Terminator and I know a lot of people weren't fond of T3, but I really enjoyed it. I would have liked to have seen the original John Connor actor, however, play the role even though I adored the actor they got. But I was biased with him 'cause I loved him in Carnivale.

I love the Terminator series. First one was great, the second was brilliant and surpassed the first in every way, and the third was just an enjoyable popcorn flick. Looking forward to part 4 with Christian Bale as John Connor.

omgosh indy! how could i forget!!
i LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE the indy films. Technically not gonna be a trilogy no more but the first 3 were all amazing and the fourth looks great.
Im not a fan of star wars so those go right over my head. I dont hate it but i dont love it either.
and yes die hard was great as well. again i guess its not a trilogy anymore but the fourth one still rocked! The only thing it lacked was the brutalness of the first 3. All the swearing and blood and violence. Yeh it had violence but it all seemed more toned down than it was in the first 3. Still a bloody awesome film. Plus it had kevin smith in.lol.

Lord of the Rings is by far the best trilogy ever. I absolutely adore it. I think the only reasons why it worked so well is because they were all made at the same time, and that it was made by a person who truly loved and cared about the books. Peter Jackson, you rock my socks lol Die Hard and Pirates of the Caribbean were also great. I wasn't impressed at all with Spiderman 3 or Shrek 3. Especially Shrek, that was such a let down. I absolutely adore the first 2 movies, but the 3rd isn't as good. Plus Justin Timberlake as an addition to the cast, terrible! Love his music, but the guy isn't made for voiceovers or acting. His version of whiney Arthur drove me insane. He sounds like a girl, lmao! And Spiderman 3 was cringe-worthy. Especially Tobey dancing around, wtf was that all about? Ick, and his hair was greasy and bad too. They should have really tried to make something better than that. I really like the first 2, but blech to 3. I've seen all 3 Indy films too, but there was one I didn't like because of the actress in it. The Temple of Doom. The other 2 were great, but the woman in the Temple of Doom really irritated me, plus it wasn't as well written as the other 2. And the Bourne films were fantastic!

Oh, and I forgot to mention Jurassic Park. I really loved the first 2 movies, but the 3rd one wasn't as good. The other 2 don't compare to the genious of the first. I hope if/when they finally get the script done for Jurassic Park 4 that they make something as good as the first one, not something like #3 again.

Looking forward to part 4 with Christian Bale as John Connor. Christian Bale is going to be John Connor? Suddenly I actually care about T4. To answer the original question, trilogies are popular because they give a "beginning, middle and end" type effect that, if done right, gives the movies a lot more of a sense of closure. You know what trilogy really sucked? The Batman movies (not counting Batman Forever as a movie at all, of course, because it wasn't one). I strongly disliked ALL of those. I have high hopes for the new Batman series, though. Batman Begins is one of my all time favorite movies.
