This is rediculous... I mean, I can see the point of them not airing the 13th episode in order to lead into a second season, but why say they're not airing it at this point? When can they actually confirm that it will/will not have its second season? That would be such a waste of money for them, to just let it fall into a tv abyss.

Tim Minear just posted on Whedonesque: Okay. So maybe I can help clarify this somewhat. Because we scrapped the original pilot -- and in fact cannibalized some of its parts for other eps -- we really ended up with 12 episodes. But the studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13 number. So we created a standalone kind of coda episode. Which is the mythical new episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it’s awesome. So again, this royal screw up has everything to do with FOX's original episode deal and nothing to do with a possible cancellation of the show. Just like before this mess, we will not hear anything until May about a possible Season 2.

Possibly a new low from a PR point of view?

Definitely. They should have issued a press release explaining ALL OF THIS.

Possibly a new low from a PR point of view? I'd say so. I actually brought this up today in class (I'm a PR major), and my teacher was pretty surprised at how royally FOX screwed this press release up.

if this show miraculously endures all this gos se and gets to live at least as long as Angel, this whole season 1 drama will make a great story to tell to the new fans coming in late in the game.

If episode 12 functions better as an exciting and intruiging season finale, then it should be the last aired. I'm fine with episode 13 on the DVD only as extra incentive for that to be bought.
Nothing has changed really. We're still just waiting the horrible wait to see if Fox has any intelligence/taste/forsight, or whether traditional ratings will spell the untimely death of another Joss Whedon show.

Holy crap. I just got the tweet from whedontrivia, and freaked out, running upstairs to see what the heck was going on. I've actually been really optimistic about Dollhouse, having this weird faith that Fox will have learned better than to mess with Joss by now, and that we'd get at least a second season. I've been far more concerned about the future of TTSCC - until just a minute ago.....
So now I'm very relieved to hear that the show hasn't been cancelled. And very discomfitted to hear that maybe it just hasn't been cancelled yet. I'm comforted to hear that Fox is considering a second season, while feeling really foolish for trusting them at all. It's exactly this kind of idiotic management that cost us Firefly, and Angel, and probably TTSCC.......
I understand the thing about the pilot, and the coda and the 13 episode deal, but Wyndham made a very good point about cancellation rumors affecting the show's ratings, and what exactly did they think would happen?
Bleurgh. Ok, calmer now. Vent over. But seriously, this is it for me. If Dollhouse goes, my family goes. We'll never watch another Fox broadcast again. We don't really watch television in the first place, these genre shows are all we care about. And if they're just going to be meddled to death, we won't bother anymore. We'll follow Joss into his bold new internet medium, and live in a happy land where freedom rings and artists get to tell the stories they want to tell. And we will call it our land. And Fox executives won't be welcome.

ugh this is such bad news... IMO, fox is screwing over Joss and eliza for a combined third time... Firefly, Tru Calling, Dollhouse...
but on the pro-FOX side: Maybe they are thinking of renewing Dollhouse and putting Epitaph ONe one the DVD to make more people buy it and convince the higher-ups to renew it...
i actually feel kinda confident that it'll get picked up... Everyone remember: WE can't loose hope yet... nothing's official until it's official.

Joss talked at Harvard recently, and TASTEFUL GEEKERY did a write up, and here is a blurb about what Joss said about Dollhouse: The sad part was Joss’ talk about Dollhouse. He reported that he was going to do his best to get that 13th episode aired because it was really cool and apparently gave a lot of answers to some of the burning Dollhouse questions. (The complete deal about this was reported on EW yesterday. Caution, there are spoilers in the article, but if you gloss past the first few paragraphs, like I did, you can get the info without being spoiled.) In addition, Joss made a remark that seemed to indicate he wasn’t hopeful about Dollhouse’s renewal, which was saddening, but not surprising. He also mentioned that some of the choices made on Dollhouse were about the network pushing its agenda, specifically in terms of the look of most of the dolls being ideal model types. This was something I had assumed, but it was nice to get it confirmed.Dammit.

Do you think the 13th episode could be aired outside the US? Like when it is shown here in the UK, would sci-fi channel have the rights to show it? Or does Fox have the rights to say no-where can show it?

So yeah, it looks like they can show it.

Ok, before we cancel the show ourselves with giving up.. let's remember how close Buffy was to canceling after its first season, and look how far it got!

True. Buffy got so much better after all of the mostly crappy 1st season. I just am a lil worried after what happened to T:SCC and it's sci-fi like Dollhouse is. Oh, FOX. Pretty much any show on Friday nights is not going to do well, that's a given. They just need to switch nights.

Joss has been talking to Fox and getting surprisingly upbeat feedback, apparently. From PaleyFest yesterday: The whole article is here.
