They are a corporation, after all.
Unfortunately, Reality TV brings in more revenue through higher ratings.... which I find very sad. Fact is, if it wasn't for the demand of Reality TV like "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC or "American Idol" on FOX, we wouldn't see those types of shows nearly as often, or as much ad space spent to promote such shows.

Actually, that's a myth. Reality shows bomb just as often as scripted shows and FOx has had a lot of reality bombs over the years. There is no one magic formula for a hit-being a reality show is no more of a guarantee of being a hit than anything else... Anyway, hopefully,we'll get Dollhouse Season 2 regardless of anything else....
Best wishes,
Scott

Here's a really good article on the changing significance of Nielsen ratings, and how some networks (NBC) don't seem to understand. I have a hunch that Fox does understand, and that explains why they'd put a show like this on Friday night in the first place, and why they've seemed more upbeat about the show than the critics and even the fans. Maybe Fox has always known that this show wouldn't sink or swim based solely on the live broadcast numbers. This last episode is once again in the top 5 downloads at iTunes.

Not only is 'Echoes' currently at spot number 4 out of the top 100, but they are FOUR episodes in the 100. "Echoes" is at 4, "Man on the Street" at 38, "Ghost" at 54, and "The Target" at 100.
Also, three to four episodes are always in the top 100 on iTunes, so even though it's not doing so grand on TV, it's doing rather well online.
I have hope that this show won't be canceled.

Thats great news. Is there anyway the public can find out how many hits it got on Hulu? Not exact numbers, but if you click on the "Most Popular" tab you'll see "Echoes" right near the top of the page for today's listing, and in the top 12 for this week's listing. I think it and "Man on the Street" are both still on the first page of most popular downloads for the month. On Fancast.com, Dollhouse is listed #1 in the "Most Popular Today" section.

Actually, I think that Fox may actually understand this more than people give them credit for. For one, let's not forget that there was that Hulu commercial with Eliza Dushku on in. It was pushing for people to check out the show on Hulu, which gives me hope that the Hulu viewership numbers may actually mean something to Fox.

Decent itunes sales could keep this show afloat couldn't it?

Decent itunes sales could keep this show afloat couldn't it? While it's good, it can take less than 25,000 downloads to become #1. It's money, but FOX makes so much more with just one commercial that runs during the show.

Good download numbers alone won't save the show. They do demonstrate, however, that there's a lot of interest in the show by an attractive demographic. Dollhouse's DVR and download numbers (and projected DVD sales) should convince Fox that it's worth a bit of extra effort to help the show and its audience find each other.

Yeah, that's one thing about Whedon fans, we love to throw money at whatever gets released. So the ratings are low, but I think there can be many ways FOX could make a profit off the show.

That's what they did with Family Guy, it got cancelled after 3 years and the Dvd sales did so well, it was brought back 2 and a half years later and is one of the most viewed things on FOX.

FOX will definitely profit off of the DVD's. Just look at Firefly. Although, if canceled this season, I doubt Dollhouse will be able to generate as much acclaim as Firefly did, which is what really got Firefly DVD's off of the shelves. But FOX will still profit, which may be why we could see Dollhouse released on DVD in the early Summer, if FOX wants to use early DVD sales to help make up their minds about renewing the show. That's all just speculative on my part though.

The FOX network doesn't get any profit from the DVDs though, that all goes to 20th Century. But I remember reading that it'd be possible for 20th Century to see the potential and cut a deal with FOX to keep the show running.
Gotta admit I got kind of angry when I saw that Friday Night Lights just got picked up for another two seasons when Dollhouse usually does better. All these companies and deals and money just make me go crazy.

All these companies and deals and money just make me go crazy. Well Friday Night Lights is a unique case because everyone (EVERYONE) at NBC loves the show and wants it to stick around. For good reason to, as it is one of the best shows on TV right now. So even with Friday Night Lights weak numbers, it still has some intense, even unprecedented, studio support. Sadly, Dollhouse doesn't have that, but with Dollhouse's DVR numbers and stuff, it does have some stuff working for it. Next week's ratings are probably going to be the most important yet, as the ratings really need to climb every week until this season ends.

This seems very excellent! The DVR viewing for "True Believer" was just released!!
DVR Viewing: 1,524 Live+Same Day 18-49 rating: 1.60 Live+ 7 Days 18-39 Rating: 2.14 Increase: 33.75%
This was the overnight ratings for this episode, I don't know if they're comparable:
Viewers: 4.3 Million 18-49 Rating/Share: 1.6/5
I think this means it went up from 1.6 to 2.1

"Friday Night Lights" has a lucrative DirecTV contract, so NBC gets paid regardless of the broadcast ratings. That's why it sticks around.
Fox is counting on high DVR numbers for Dollhouse. That's why they have the short commercial breaks... so it's not worth the trouble for DVR viewers to zap through the commercials.
But the fact that Fox is doing that "remote-free TV" thing with Dollhouse means they knew from the beginning that it would be heavily recorded.

I thought remote free TV just makes buying an ad for that program more expensive and hence they don't loose any money. I don't think it has anything to do with DVR numbers (they also do it with Fringe). It has to do with people sticking to FOX for the full hour rather than browsing other channels during commercials (hence the REMOTE FREE part).
