hmmm inventing new terms? lol....well i remember on 'The L Word' (a tv show) one character called someone a "Hasbian" because she has been in a lesbian relationship in the past but identifies as straight now. lol
so we could say that Willow's a "Heterobian"??....does that work? ;D
I always thought that Willow could have been bi because i know she did love Oz and Xander, however i've been thinking that maybe she,and Buffy included (and pretty much everyone in the Buffyverse), are more pansexual? Which means: a sexual orientation, characterized by the potential for aesthetic attraction, romantic love, or sexual desire towards people, regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. But in Buffyverse pansexuality doesn't just stop at 'people' because the Buffyverse has a wide range of love interests where the two that are in love or attracted to each other are either same-gendered, different gendered, and even different species such as: human's and vampires, humans and werewolves, vampires and werewolves (Angel and that werewolf lady) humans and other demons (Doyle's ex-wife who was in love with him and was soon to be married to another demon) also on Angel the ep "War Zone" we see a demonic brothel/club that rich humans go to, also Dawn going out with the tricewise, and so much more examples.
In the Buffyverse i think it's very hard to put set-in-stone 'gay' and 'straight' labels on people when viewing their sexuality because overall it looks like they're all just attracted by their 'connection' they have to one another regardless of who or even what they are which pansexual defines.

This was one of the best descriptions I've read in this thread and it stands out because of the word "pansexualism". I'm guessing this word is pretty new and not as well known as the more usual "heterosexual", "bisexual" and "lesbian" terminologies are. You may be right except when Buffy slept with Satsu...not many people may understand this new idea. This probably explains why some people went "Huh?!" showing Buffy in bed with the other Slayer. Joss is so way ahead of his time on this radical concept that it's going to take a few decades or more before we catch up to him in understanding it.

I think girls do have a tendency to experiment and to an extent is was the warmth and comfort that Satsu brought that made a difference to Buffy- not her gender
Also I think after she used Spiek in exactly the same way (sleeping with someone who loved her just because she needed suppoirt and they were the easiest option) her and Satsu was a very realistic event and very true to the character

Joss is so way ahead of his time on this radical concept that it's going to take a few decades or more before we catch up to him in understanding it. I really do not think Buffy falls under pansexualism at all. Pansexualism implies that someone is not attracted to genders, but rather to people. Buffy has never shown any attraction to a girl ever. Experimentation does not equal attraction. If she had sex with Satsu and wanted to continue with it, then I think she might fall under a different sexual orientation. I mostly got the impression that she mostly had sex cause she felt disconnected. And now that I've read more about pansexuality (read: wikipedia), Willow fits under that sexuality way more than being defined as a lesbian or bisexual. She's clearly not lesbian because she has been attracted to many boys earlier. (Once again, I don't believe sexuality magically[or fluidly] changes) I definitely think she's more attracted to specific people rather than specific genders, explains her falling for Tara despite there being no inklings towards lesbianic wishes during high school. And as has been said multiple times in the thread, it's like Willow explains to Kennedy, she fell in love with a woman, not women. In all honesty, if she fell in love with a man later in the series, I don't think it would be out of her character cause she was never solely lesbian in the first place. The writers defining her as such was a mistake on their part, or at least, I think a mistake on their part.

I agree with lightandmagic. My mind cannot fathom a person going from as straight as someone can be to as gay as someone can be. It just doesn't make sense to me. If a person I always knew as gay suddenly said "straight now!" and claimed only to be attracted to people of the opposite sex from now on, I'd be very confused by that as well. In any case, I still don't believe Willow is "completely" gay. I think she very much prefers women now, but if a guy came along that she felt was the one, I don't think it would be a big deal for her considering her past heterosexual relationships and attractions (which were genuine).

No offence you guys, but there is a possibility that a straight person can become gay or a gay person can become straight. It's not about what your mind thinks about people's sexuality changing, because it can happen. What about that lesbian woman in friends who was married to Ross and then became gay? Plus, even some straight people don't understand why people are gay, and they just don't believe in it. It's a huge world we're living in and anything can happen.

It's not about what your mind thinks about people's sexuality changing, because it can happen. What about that lesbian woman in friends who was married to Ross and then became gay? It's called 'denial'. It was never said in Friends that Carol just turned gay. Infact, it was said several times that Ross 'married a lesbian', meaning that she was a lesbian when he married her.

Ok fair enough for Carol she probably was living in denial at the time but that doesn't mean some peoples sexuality doesn't change because it does.

Ok fair enough for Carol she probably was living in denial at the time but that doesn't mean some peoples sexuality doesn't change because it does. I don't think someone can go from being exclusively straight to exclusively gay or vice versa. Your sexuality doesn't really change, merely your understanding of it. Willow choosing to identify as lesbian rather than straight or bisexual doesn't mean her sexuality itself changed, it just meant she was proud to be a "friend of Sappho"; she was attracted to this new lifestyle, much like she was to witchcraft. As whatsherface said in "Goddesses and Monsters", Willow's lesbian identity is more of a surface layer, not a totally deep-rooted aspect of her personality. Not trying to devalue Willow's lesbianism or lesbian relationships, just saying that self-identity is an important part of sexuality. And choosing to identity as something isn't the same as your sexuality changing with the wind.

I believe it is possible for a homosexual to fall in love with someone of the opposite sex, and I belive it is possible for a heterosexual to fall in love with someone of the same sex. I believe it is possible for someone who identifies with one sexuality to discover that they can identify with both etc etc blah blah. However, I find it very difficult to believe (as EWR put it) in going from end of the scale to the other.

I agree- people fall in love with people and if you have enough in common and you have a spark I don't think that gender makes that much of a difference. In some ways I agree that everybody is on a sort of sliding scale and although some of us are leaing more towards straight and some of us more towards gay we all have a bit of both in us
