That's interesting. I never knew Maggie Walsh's actress pulled out, that actually explains a lot I guess. Is this confirmed information? I made some quick research but couldn't find anything on Lindsey Crouse pulling out. Any of you know that? I wish Maggie Walsh had not been killed off - and to rant a little: I wish she had not returned as a Zombie. It was sad to see that. Did some research, here's what I got : - Interview with producer/writer Marti Noxon www.cold-open.com/2009/08/11/interview-a-buffy-retrospective-with-marti-noxon/

This is gonna be seen a sacrilege to alot of yall... Also posted this in one of the Season 9 threads...
But perhaps its time to let someone other than Joss Whedon have a shot a writing and directing Buffy. Its the only way the franchise will really be able to grow out of being just a popular 90's teen show. To help it be more than about just a few people that made this one show.

Seriously though, I understand your point but I think Buffy is Joss's baby so he should have complete creative control, for better or worse.

Yeah. You'd have to have Joss in there somewhere. He did create the thing, and despite some slips he did a damn fine job. But there should be some new faces to help him.
But I do think that any new 'Buffy' series should have new characters and be a Buffyverse series. This way the original cast can come in for arcs without having to commit to the long haul as, though I'm sure many of them love their characters, many of them are involved in other projects. Plus, it allows them to do different themes that wouldn't fit within the scope of Buffy.

I don't count the comics as part of the Buffy seasons. I see them the same way as I see the other Buffy literature out there. For me it ends at season seven, it;s nice to think about what happens afterwards and if I had the chance I'd like to read the comics, but I don't see it as a neccessity in the way that when finishing one season of Buffy it is neccessary to watch the next.

I usually don't think Buffy & Angel's pre-staking jokes are "cool", too many of them suck (pun intended). I can't tell you how often I roll my eyes or shout at the scream "focus on fighting, not quipping! That's a stupid reason to die for, because you didn't pay enough attention!"
I think of them more as flaws, quirks the characters have that are annoying, but still part of what makes them entertaining. Kind of like Spike's leering. Obnoxious but a part of what makes the character.
I think that Buffy personally use the jokes as a way to deal with slaying, atleast at first. Make fun of your enemy, so you don't have to feel bad about slaying a ex-innocent being. Not sure why Angel does it. In the beginning it really didn't fit with my image of him as the silent type, but now I think it suits his smug attitude.
Still annoying as hell tough.
"I'm Buffy and you're history" and "Good dogs don't bite" are very cute, but laughable.

I think Joss should always write "his" Buffy, ie the canonical version who's currently appearing in the comics. But I'm all for a reboot Buffy movie with a totally different creative team. It's sad that the Whedon zealots are too close-minded to accept a new version of the character, especially since it wouldn't infringe on Joss' version.

If Joss allowed it, I wouldn't mind as much, but it felt like they were stealing his work when I heard about the reboot movie.
It also pissed me off that anyone would waste money on a second version of Buffy that had nothing to do with Joss, when he had proven he's a real money-maker.
And why tell the same story twice? Why not use a new slayer in the same verse? Do they really think they can do a better Buffy than Joss? I think they can't, and in that case, it's money down the drain.
Maybe 10, 20 years from now when Joss' Buffy isn't still being published and everyone has given up hope about a SMG-Buffy movie, it might be time for a reboot.
Rant over.

Skytte, I've made a lot of these arguments before but pig-headedness forces me to keep doing so. I'm going to address your points individually...
And why tell the same story twice? Because it's a f***ing awesome story that warrants re-telling? Countless fictional characters are rebooted and adapted numerous times and people continue to pay money to see the same story because they love it. A reboot would allow the Buffy story to reach a new and wider audience, who might not be willing to sit through an old TV show from the 90s.
Why not use a new slayer in the same verse? Because Buffy the character is iconic. A film entitled Vi the Vampire Slayer or even Fray won't be as marketable as Buffy. And because frankly, Buffy is an awesome character. Why settle for someone different? It's like saying "Why do a 007 reboot when you could do a 008 movie?"
Do they really think they can do a better Buffy than Joss? Joss is not infallible, as Season Eight is tragically proving. Someone else could easily take the amazing raw materials he created and reinvent them into something impressive. Besides, "better" is relative. Us fans of the show might not like it as much, but you can bet a new audience would probably love it if it was done well. Would another version of your favourite story really be so terrible? Would it honestly infringe on your enjoyment of the show?
Maybe 10, 20 years from now when Joss' Buffy isn't still being published and everyone has given up hope about a SMG-Buffy movie, it might be time for a reboot. Is anyone seriously still holding out hope for an SMG Buffy movie? If so, I think it might be time to move on. Why not cash in on the vampire craze and show Twilight how it should be done?

Problem with most reboots/remakes these days... plenty of flash (which is easy enough with today's CGI technology), not so much substance. 007 and Batman may be one of the few franchises that have been successfully rebooted for the better. Then again, after the two Joel Schumacher movies, it's hard to see how the Batman franchise could've gone any further south (no offense Australia).

@ Paul Pig-headedness is underated. Going on and on can be fun sometimes I kind of wish I could see it your way. I don't think you're wrong, just that you're looking at it differently and being passionate about different things than me. Skytte, I've made a lot of these arguments before but pig-headedness forces me to keep doing so. I'm going to address your points individually... And why tell the same story twice?Because it's a f***ing awesome story that warrants re-telling? A reboot would allow the Buffy story to reach a new and wider audience, who might not be willing to sit through an old TV show from the 90s. It is a great story, but I want us to get new things. I would watch a reboot, no matter what reviews it got, but while I'm sitting there I would be sighing over that we couldn't get something new, hopefully Joss-written. I'm aware of that. Money-wise, Buffy would attract more people. But like I said, Buffy's story have been told, why not try something new? I don't know if a Vi-movie would bring in more money than a reboot-movie, I'm just saying I'm personally interested in that story more. I hope my enjoyment of the show would be the same, no matter how many reboots are made, but while I think that someone could possible do better than Joss, it seems unlikely. Why not bet on a sure thing? Of course, this depends on the audience. If some wants want to do a kids show of Buffy the vampire slayer, maybe a animated one aimed at 5-10 year olds, I wouldn't demand that Joss did it, because I have no idea if he would be able to do it well. [/quote] I'm still hoping, and I'll keep hoping until she dies. Or get too many wrinkles, maybe crutches, and her kicking ass would look silly. Of course, I loved the last Indiana Jones movie, so who knows; Maybe I would enjoy the gang fighting demons into their fifthies?

Okay,Dont hate me but do you really think that after the movies like Batman, like the Avengers, like all the others that are far more grandiose, that any movie studio would take the chance with a Buffy reboot? Twilight grasped an audience Why? There was no life outside the novel that existed. With Buffy I just don't think the "moneys that Be "would ever broach that scenario. It was a great ground breaking TV show, but multimillion dollar movie. Just not seeing it.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see how people come to this conclusion. He has one, count them 1, truly successful franchise to his name.

Do you think The Dark Knight was successful because there was no other way to get a Batman fix at the time.
I could think of quite a few ways a reboot could be different than the series. Perhaps actually make it scary. 30 Days of Night scary.

Superhero movies are easy to reboot because its generally the same plot just being revamped with new effects and new actors. Buffy isn't really comparable in my mind to Batman. Buffy didn't start off as a comic and Buffy never fell in line with the typical superhero format, it was a combination of drama, comedy, and also had a very distinctive language. A movie would fail, simply because you can't build a character up like Buffy in only a couple hours for a new audience and new story. Batman doesn't have this problem because when you watch a Batman movie, you already know the character, who the bad guys are, and the tone you can expect.
Only thing that would work in my opinion would be a tv series format reboot. But if they try to do a comedy/drama it would be too similar. They would have to make it more serious and scary, which would need a lot of re-writing and appeal to a different audience. I think its possible, but with all the changes they would have to make to rework Buffy, it would barely resemble the original, so I don't see the point.

Yeah but the reason Batman is like that is because he has been around for years. Become a true myth of today's world. I think I once heard that if you put all people, real and fictional, on a list of most popular and known, I believe Batman and few other comic book heroes were in the top 5. Why is that? Because others were allowed to take the character to new heights. Yes Bob Kane and Bill Finger created the character, but it took Dennis O'Neil, Adam West, Tim Burton, Frank Miller, Bruce Timm and countless others to make the character as big as it is today. If Buffy is not allowed to do that, it will become just another 90's teen show that will, not necessarily forgotten, but fall into obscurity in another ten years. I think its funny, though, the same people that want Buffy to be huge, are the same ones that scream and shout everytime the idea of people not from said 90's show being a part of it. Also, if Buffy is supposed to be a role model to women, showing how they as themselves can over come their problems, with her main audience being teenage to young women, do you really think a show/movie about a 40 year old Buffy would be relate-able to them.

Like I said, I get what you're saying. But I don't care if Buffy becomes "huge" again. I just started watching/reading the series this year and I see it as a cult classic tv show. I'm pretty happy with that, and I would be fine if the series stopped at S7. If they did want to continue it in live action format, I think astranger hits the nail on the head. Using some original cast members to please old fans and having them be worked into a new Buffy story would probably please everyone. Doing it that way would probably even make the transition easier for fans who would only want Whedon to touch it. Safest route, imo. Also, if Buffy is supposed to be a role model to women, showing how they as themselves can over come their problems, with her main audience being teenage to young women, do you really think a show/movie about a 40 year old Buffy would be relate-able to them. You've got a point there. But I think this brings up another problem with the Buffy reboot idea. If you're trying to connect with the teenage girl audience, it may be tricky to use Buffy as a role model today. Twilight was mentioned, that has the largest fanbase of young women and Bella is almost an anti-Buffy. I'm not so sure the girl power movement that allowed Buffy to be big in the 90's is still as strong today. I'd imagine a reboot would probably end up looking like a mash up between Kill Bill and 30 Days of Night..

"I'd imagine a reboot would probably end up looking like a mash up between Kill Bill and 30 Days of Night.." - Astray
Might just be the guy in me...
But that sounds FREAKIN' AMAZING!!!!!!
And don't get me wrong, I'd love anything new set in the Buffyverse. But this late after the show has ended, I would see it being just a really big uphill battle to try and make a new spinoff that didn't feature Buffy prominently. The franchise is based around one character, Buffy. For a non-Buffy/Buffy show to be successful, it would have to aquire and keep an audience completely on its own. Without riding the Buffy coattails. Something like Ripper would have actually been really good here. Buffy but not Buffy. But in the end it has to get back to Buffy. And Gellar isn't getting any younger.
My stupid idea, and even I acknowlege how stupid this is... If all it takes is talking with the Kuzuis to get the rights to the character, I'd love it if Syfy or some other channel made a series of tv movies set in a new universe. Now granted I'm not talking Syfy's monster movie of the week type thing. I'm talking more like there Tin Man, Alice, the stuff they actually put some money into.
