I HATE SPIKE. I HATE SPUFFY. Everyone says they're so hot adn such a great couple, but I want everyone to just stop and look at something, here. HE. TRIED. TO. RAPE. HER. that is absolutely unforgivable, and I don't see how people can say Spike and Buffy are perfect for each other. The way I see it is, the rape thing happened when he didn't have a soul. He has one now, so he is different now (despite it being hard to tell sometimes). Soulless Angel(us) raped tons of women (and possibly guys, who knows), but Angel would never do that. I like Warren. Not in the "Oh he's a cool character and I'd totally hang out with him in real life!" kind of way. But as an observer, I find his character intriguing and I really like Adam Busch as an actor. That being said, I had no sympathy for him when Willow killed him, and I think he deserved it (whether or not I agree with Willow being the one to kill him is another story).

Spike may have tried to rape her, but he was like any rapist, vile and without a soul. But when he came back he was different, and he did make up for it in the end. And what's more Buffy forgave him and I think deep down she really did love him.

^^^In complete agreeance. i don't like when people say the rape was Buffy's fault or even partially her fault because rape is never okay, however Spike didn't have a soul. People rarely bitch and Buffy forgiving Angel for everything he did when he was evil, but Spike somehow is still responsible for what a demon did? Doesn't seem right. Buffy and Spike mostly in the 7th season, beautiful arc, and she definitely loved him.

I'm way too close to this topic to post on it. So I am going to post a new rant/opinion/confession.
I think I am the only person on the forum who liked Riley. I thought he was a great character. He did have a tendency to be a little whiny from time to time (admittedly), but overall I liked him. And I thought Buffy's relationship with him was a nice change after her being with Angel for close to three seasons. I think it was what her character needed at the time, and it worked well. And I think he really cared for her, and I was sad when he left and she tried to catch him to stop him, but didn't.

^^I like Riley, too. He's not a fave but I like him. And actually in the "He's a really cool character and I would hang out with him in real life" kind of way. And I agree with your post.

I always liked Riley too. Not too happy about some of the stuff he did in season 5, but overall I did like him a lot. I'm rewatching season 4 right now, and I really enjoy his earlier episodes. I especially liked the relationship he had with Willow in the beginning, it's too bad that they didn't play more on that. I think they could have been closer.

One of the writers or producers mentioned in a DVD commentary that they had to be careful putting Riley and Willow together because Marc Blucas and Alyson Hannigan had such good chemistry that people started expecting those characters to hook up. (Of course, Alyson Hannigan could probably play a scene against a doorknob and have good chemistry with it, but she and Blucas seemed to play especially well off of each other.) Too many Willow/Riley scenes and fans might have started rooting for Riley to break up with Buffy and get together with Willow.

I hate it when people constantly remark on Spike trying to rape Buffy, but fail to acknowledge everything she did to him. What he attempted to do was unacceptable and Buffy certainly didn't deserve it, but the abuse went both ways.

Too many Willow/Riley scenes and fans might have started rooting for Riley to break up with Buffy and get together with Willow. I kind of rooted for them. When they had those two scenes together (at the party and in Willow's room) I thought "I want to read a fanfic where tehy get together. They would be adorable." Then he saved her from getting hit by a car. I would not have been upset if he had started to date Willow instead (I should mention that when I watched season 4, I was a big Willow fan and still a Bangel fan). EDIT- I hate it when people constantly remark on Spike trying to rape Buffy, but fail to acknowledge everything she did to him. What he attempted to do was unacceptable and Buffy certainly didn't deserve it, but the abuse went both ways. I can't agree with that (not saying you're opinion is bad, just disagreeing). Could be because I'm fine whining about bad things other people have done without bringing up different events. I see no reason to constantly follow up a "Spike was a bad man" with "Buffy was mean sometimes". Kind of a different complaint. It would be bad manners too, saying "Buffy was almost raped" and "She was a bad person" in the same sentence. Kind of talking ill about the dead, or any kind of victim. Of course, I might be thinking that, because I don't blame Buffy for what she did. I can't say who was the more addicted to who and the most depressed/heartbroken in season 6, who was worst, but I have a hard time being angry with Buffy for taking out her pain on a murderer. If she had abused a nice man, I would probably feel different(still not thinking she deserved rape, she was suicidal and depressed after all, but I more easily mention the bad she has done).

I really don't like the way the Spuffy relationship went in season 6. The only real moment between them that I truly loved in season 6 was when he first saw Buffy again, "every night I saved you", that was beautiful. And he was the first one she told that she thought she was in heaven. Why couldn't it have kept going that way? I mean sure the guy is soulless, but he's always been a different kind of soulless than other regular vampires. Spike seemed to carry a lot more humanity with him than other vampires like Angelus did. They should have stuck with how their relationship was in very early season 6, not the abusive relationship route.
I think a lot of fans have trouble telling Spike without a soul and Spike with a soul apart. There's not a huge distinction there. He's pretty much the same guy with or without a soul. It's not like the huge difference between Angel and Angelus. I think that's why a lot of fans have problems forgiving him for the attempted rape even after he got a soul back. I admit, I find it hard to forgive him myself.
On the Riley/Willow thing, I wouldn't have been against those 2 getting together either, they had great chemistry.

I liked how Buffy experiences peace and then ,it realistically made the theme that the world is hell, which is so relate-able because life is hard.

I agree that was Buffy and Spike had in the beginning of the season was great, but in case they would have only been confidants, and everything would have been smooth sailing, or if Buffy and Spike had gotten involved romantically in a healthy relationship I would yell "Hold up! He's a vampire for christ sake, not the guy next door with a rough edge. He's evil and has, from what we've seen on screen, only had messed up relationships (his "family", Angelus Darla and Drusilla, didn't exactly treat each other nicely). Why is this working so well?"
So it had to be messed up in some way. Just look how relatively normal healthy people get fraked up in the buffyverse. But the depressed slayer and massmurdering vampire have a decent relationship? Not in a Whedon show, no way.
I love that Joss doesn't make perfect characters, but I can't say I enjoy that he took them that far. Here I was complaining about cheating, broken hearts and boyfriends being sent to hell, when something worse was coming. Spuffy.
I'm afraid of what we'll get to see in season 9. What will Joss do?
I made a long list of how the characters' lives got worse and worse, but I guess that's redundant, since you all probably know that. So next season, I expect hell. Acually, I expect Hell this season too. Season 8 has been relatively pain free(unless Buffy & Angel we're forced by the universe to have sex, which I believe, then it's definitly more gross than some seasons), and I think we'll see something heartbreaking by the end of season 8. Considering that we only have 5 issues left (plus a one shot) I'm betting charcater death, since there's not much "space"/time left to hurt us.

* Spuffy to me was the better embodiment of a mature adult relationship, where both make mistakes.
*Bangel was the true nature of a first relationship, it was tragic full of angst and heartbreak and woe. And the theme was doomed love.

I HATE BANGEL. I hate their whiny, immature, cliched, relationship, but I respect that they were an important part of the first 3 seasons. What I REALLY hate was how they kept dragging the characters back together when they barely knew each other, had totally new lives and relationships, and it was just completely stupid and unrealistic fan service.
I think Season 7 is underrated. Sure the potentials were pretty much crap but it had a lot of great episodes like 'Selfless', 'Conversations With Dead People', 'Storyteller', 'Dirty Girls', 'Touched' and 'Chosen'.
I think Andrew is a hilarious character from Season 7 onward and always enjoy his presence.
Angel Season 5 is my absolute favorite.
I hated Fred and thought she was unreallistic and a Mary Sue. I hated how when Cordelia died no one even blinked, yet we had a whole season of 'OH, My beautiful darling Fred!!! How will we go on without you! NOOOOO!!!!!.... Cordelia Who?"
Cordelia is one of my top 5 Buffyverse characters and I hated what they did to her from the end of Season 3 onwards. I mean, WTH was with that outfit she was wearing in the finale. She would never wear that! She wasn't any fun when they made her 'Saint Cordy' . 'You're Welcome' was fantastic in bringing the old Cordy back and makes me cry buckets everytime.
Wesley is very underrated. Alexis Denisof is an awesome actor and he had SUCH a GREAT arc!
I think 'Seeing Red' totally sucks ( besides the Willow/Tara moments) and it's the one episode of Buffy that I CAN"T watch.
I too thought Tara was ridiculously boring. Though I did like her in Season 6.
I found Willow more interesting and likable in Season 1-3. She is still one of my favorite characters overall and I liked her arc besides the 'I'm a DRUGGIE!' part.
I hate how everyone( even Joss) is like "No, Spike and Buffy can never EVER be together because of the AR!" and then they're like "Buffy and Angel can have TRU WUV and SPACE SEX forever despite the fact that he killed Jenny Calendar, psychologically tortured her for months, and tried to end the world when HE didn't have a soul!' Also, he has a son now and a whole different life. Such retarded double standards.
SEASON 8 SUCKS. SO MUCH. GRRRR. The first 4 arcs are passable but the rest are completely moronic, poorly written, out of character crap! I mean a 'sentient universe', 'space sex', 'Robo-Dawn', 'skinless Warren', 'Weirdly retro Spike'. WTH??!?!?!?
I enjoy the later seasons more than the early ones on a whole because I think the acting and humor are both much improved. Also, I hate Bangel, and love Spike, Anya, and Andrew, so yeah, go figure. That said, I love parts of every season.
I think Season 1 is 90% crap compared to the rest of the show.
I agree that David Boreanaz isn't that great of an actor. I see him as more 'bland' than 'awful' though. I like him sometimes. Namely as Angelus in Season 2 of when he's doing comedy.
I'm glad Fred died because I think Illyria is SO much better.
I actually like Wesley/Lilah. At first I hated them, but they've really grown on me.
Fred and Gunn are 2 of the most boring characters in the 'verse and their relationship was really dull and annoying.
Buffy Season 2 is very VERY overrated. It has some great episodes and a great arc but also a LOT of weak episodes.
Spike is my favorite character. I know this isn't unpopular, but this thread has a lot of Spike hate so I couldn't help it.
Spuffy is my favorite couple, but I HATE them in Season 6. I just love them for 5 and 7.
I thought Dark Willow was cheesy. I only liked her in 'Villains'.
I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is a fantastic actress and all, but I never really liked the character of Buffy that much.
Spike should have had more interactions with the scoobies outside Buffy and Dawn. Especially more scenes with Spike/ Joyce, Spike/ Xander, Spike/Willow, Spike/Giles, Spike/Andrew, Spike/Anya, Spike/Cordy, Spike/ random extra #27. I wouldn't mind losing a few random Spike/Buffy scenes for these since I think his interactions with the scoobies were always memorable.
Buffy and Giles should have reconciled more in Season 7. I think it is a big oversight on the writers part that they never repaired the scoobies relationships onscreen in Season 7.
Hmm, I guess I'm done ranting now. For now, anyway. It feels nice to get all that off my chest.
