generally, a mid-season fill in like Buffy very rarely goes past a first season (two examples against this is The Office and Buffy, of course) but i still didn't like season 1 at all... Ranking:
1. Season 7
2. Season 2
3. Season 3
4. Season 6
5. Season 8
6. Season 5
7. Season 4
8. Season 1

Wow, I'm surprised how many people said Season Four. Each time I watch it I'm reminded how many really good episodes are in it. Yah, the overall arc wasn't the best, but for pure episodic enjoyment, this is a great season.

So I used to hate Season 4 the most, but then I rewatched it and realized some of the episodes in it were the strongest in the series.
Anyways, I choose Season 1 for least favorite season.

I'm going for S7. Echoing some things that have already been said in this thread, I don't like how Buffy becomes a humourless bitca half way through the series, I think the First Evil is a terrible villain (not until Caleb turns up that I'm at all excited about the baddies) and several core characters become totally redundant (Giles and Anya particularly). All in all, like it still, but definitely my least favourite.

Gah! I love season 4! There's just too many wonderful one shots for me to hate it! And Season 6 is in my top two favs so I'm always surprised at how poeple hate it. My least favorite season is Season 1, because of the lack of episodes, low-budget production, and the after-school special vibe I got from most of the eps. Season 7 is my second least fav. I still love those seasons though, just not as much as the rest.

Least fave season? If I have to choose I'll go with S1, only because it has the least number of episodes. Still though, it is pretty good for the first season and I would still prefer it over a lot of the garbage that is on TV today. The show may have just been finding itself, but it had heart.

always surprised at the dislike for season 4
i get the hate for Adam, but i actually really like overall arc of the Initiative and it has some of the best standalones for the series
season 1 is my least favourite, i find Darla (only Buffy Darla), The Master, and The Annointed One very annoying and boring

The annotined one for me was boring too.
I thought his character could be deeper and darker.
