Gwen. One episode was more than enough. I hated how they used her to make Cordy jealous and then to have Gunn sleep with her.

YES. I pondered many times as to who I'd pick, somehow I must have forgotten about Gwen. Horrible character, and less and less welcome every time she appeared.

Warren, Connor, Gwen, and Darla.
I personally liked Spike up until he fell in love with Buffy, and became a complete pansy. So pretty much seasons 5-7 I did not like Spike.
Some people said they didn't like Drusilla, but I sometimes found her pointless ramblings amusing. I didn't like her and Darla as villains in Angel, but that was about the only time she bugged me.

Connor...easy! He is the only character that just bugged me without even saying a word. I would have been quite happy if he'd fallen down a well, never to be seen again.
Other characters who I agree were not written properly were Jasmine, Adam, David Nabbit (would have liked to see him come face to face with a true demon...one that wasn't going to "please" him).
And then you have Dawn....who could have kept Connor company in that well, but who I can tolerate because she was very necessary to the show and to Buffy's character development.

I agree, I hate Joss and David for killing Anya instead of Andrew. I mean what the hell was going through their minds? Did they go slightly retarded?!?! But anyway the person I think was over-used would have to be Dawn and or Jonathan. Also I think Amy was an awesome person (still my fave baddy to date)!!!

I find it very interesting how badly people seem to hate Spike. He was massively popular back in the day. Ahh.. fickle fans I say. I agree, I hate Joss and David for killing Anya instead of Andrew. Also I think Amy was an awesome person (still my fave baddy to date)!!! There's not a David around who had anything to do with Joss' decision to kill Anya, and he killed her over Andrew because the final battle needed a price. You couldn't just kill a bunch of no-namers and side characters, there'd be no impact.

"Overused" doesn't mean you hate the character though, right? I mean, I said Spike in this thread, but I don't hate him. In Seasons 6 and 7, I just got annoyed that he was in or talked about in probably 75% of every episode. He's a good character who is very well developed, but there were other characters who basically were ignored and never got a chance to shine. All that attention was focused on Spike and Buffy. While it was good drama, I also wanted the focus to be on the group dynamic.

Yeah, i agree with the above poster. I like spike as a character, but to me he definitely was overused a bit later on. Connor is the opposite, i hated seeing him, but I don't think he was really overused. If that makes any sense (i often dont so its ok)

James is goregous and has an amazing and really sexy smile.. Spike is funny and interesting and even a good guy... But the whole raping thing... just... I hate that... but it was the writes fault... And yes, I would love to see more of the other characters in season 7.... but ok, the Touched scene... after that... But Angel!!! that didn't work for me... just that... he should die in Sunnydale and for good!

Not only did David Greenwalt move over to Angel when it started, he officially left that show a good year before Buffy season 7. He had as much involvement as you did by then.

Groo's presence was annoying in Season 3. Poor sod was just a plot device.

Ooh! Good thread!
Well I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with a lot of people about Spike and Andrew. Andrew because he's annoying and useless and killed Jonathan and hello!?! He should've died, not become a scoob. It was just dumb and still is. It's the very definition of overused, whether you like him or not. The trio wore out their welcome in general. They should've paved the way for a big bad half way through the season and that's all. And speaking of things like that, The First is probably my top pick.
Spike - now that's a much more complicated issue. I love Spike. I love season 2 Spike, Lovers Walk Spike, Season 4 Spike was kind of unnecessary but overall hilarious, and while I don't consider myself a Spuffy 'shipper per se, I do absolutely love Season 5 Spike - sweating the hell out of Buffy and all "I know I'm a monster but you make me feel like a man" Spike. He could be my favorite Spike of them all.
But the fact that there are so many versions of Spike really do support the overuse thing. After season 5, I just think that the character was just getting so tired. He probably should've died and stayed dead...it would've remained a great moment. It's his being permitted to live that makes little sense in this verse. And once the Spuffy Sex controversy started, it really all did seem like fan service. They couldn't let him go without upsetting a large part of the audience and I don't think that's a good reason to keep anyone around (even if they were my favorite character.) Good for the money, maybe - but good for the fiction? It's like the writers had no convictions, they just had to let it go on. And Season 5 of Angel is without a doubt fan-service as he serves no other purpose over there.
Connor annoyed me to no end but us Buffyfesters have discussed this at great length and realized that he was only around for like 7 eps before the squicky tinkly piano of ConCord sex. He really wasn't overused, just annoying. He was totally necessary for Angel's story and it was amazing that after all of that, Angel slices his throat and mind-wipes him. I wouldn't want that moment to be erased because it was so compelling. So for that I don't think he's overused.

Connor. He annoyed me so, so much! I've never really been a fan of Amy and Darla either.

That linked interview in your post above made me happy, Enisy! The amount of people that seem to dislike Spike suprises me actually, not just because I'm a big fan, I didn't think he'd be first on the list of overused though, I always looked at him as a character that added many needed qualities to an episode when he appeared in it.

Like I said, don't worry your head over it, sweetie. It's just this forum and TWoP. (And may not even have been this forum if that one incident hadn't run the majority of the Spike fans off.)
