That interview was a horrible read. Was that really Joss, and was transcribing every repeated word necessary?

Yep, it's Joss, and it's just an excerpt from the interview. The whole thing is available here. I expressed that the transcript needed some polishing, too, but other people seem to think that the word-for-word transcription conveys Joss's trail of thought better, so I guess it's a matter of taste.

Hey now, Enisy. I'm a Slayaliver and I love Spike. While there might be a lot of vocal fans here who don't like how much Spike was used in the latter seasons, there are still a number of fans here who do. *still coveting your Spuffy banner* So pretty!

Most overused character would probably be....Andrew I guess. I thought he was funny but he didn't do much for the storyline.
Also I didn't know slayalive was spike-hate central. I personally love Spike and didn't really get the feeling that he was hated here ...

Hehe, maybe we should have a secret handshake so we're more easily identified. A Story With Emoticons Buffy goes off hunting vampires. :vampirebite: She sees vampire attacking an innocent orange person (maybe they ate too many carrots or something). She slays the vampire with ease. She's suddenly attacked from behind by a Purple demon. But do not fear! She defeats the evil Purple demon without breaking a sweat. Buffy decides that's enough slaying for one night. She goes home and decides to get some sleep. ;D Spike is busy hanging out under her bedroom window, hopelessly in the throws of his unrequited love. He's happy though because Buffy's so cute while she's sleeping.

Spike... I liked him in season 2 and he was OK in season 3/4 but I think that he should have been killed in season 4 or just have him around like 5-10 eps a season in 5-7...

And once again, I'm so glad that Joss seems to love my Spike, warts and all, instead of the 2.5-dimensional version that the people who despise him seem to favour (Season 2 - Season 4).

TVGO: Some are speculating that she was a casualty of James Marsters's cross over as Spike next season. Like, there wasn't enough money in the budget to pay for them both, so she got the boot. Joss Whedon: That's a hell of a thing to lay on James. It was a creative decision that we made before Spike came over to the show, and like I said, I don't intend to leave Cordelia in a coma for the rest of the Buffyverse. But the creative decision to have the character step down happened long before negotiations with James [started]. It should not be laid at his feet.

I don't judge Spike as an over-used supporting character. To do that, I'd have to think his material was unneccessary. I think he had a great story (6 was just a shitty season in general) and his presence only annoys people because other characters weren't used to their potential (mainly in season 7). Him getting a big story wasn't what forced other characters into the background, the writers were responsible for that. henz, that is my thought exaclty. Karma! Enisy, you persistently labeling us isn't exactly helping the situation either. As the owner of this place, I take semi offense to it. Very negative thing to put out there. I'm really tired of hearing that my forum is a Spike-hate-breeding ground. Especially on your livejournal. It's hard to live something down and get past it, when it keeps being brought back up. We even have more Spike emoticons, than many of the other characters! ;D As you can see in this very thead, many of the 'big-shots' here at SA, are big Spike lovers. Myself included! Just because I wasn't a big Season 6 Spuffy fan doesn't mean I hate Spike, nor does it mean I hated Season 5 Spuff, or Season 7 Spuff. Season 7 is my favorite, and the tenderness of their ship is one of the main reasons for that. One of the most tear-jerking episodes for me is 'Lies My Parents Told Me'. It really hits home for me. Point blank, the show would not be the same without him. And I wouldn't have anything any other way. And I want to see Spike back in Season 8. I've gotten a couple complaints about this, so I needed to say something. A few feel like you are being a bit too hard on the forum. Maybe what we need are more Spike lovers to speak up? Out of the 1300 or so people here, I am sure there are more Spike fans... I'd appreciate not being labeled as a "young twit" ever again. Thank you. I know you have no control over what comes out of Sue's mouth but it still stings, none the less. But anyway, this isn't a Spike thread. So let's move this topic back to the main discussion. If people want to discuss about Spike specifically we can make a new topic just for that. But let's keep it respectful, and remember everyone is entitled to their opinion and feelings. If you don't care for Spike too much, BE MINDFUL that you might hurt someone's feelings or anger them by being so careless with your words! The same can be said for any other character too. Instead of just saying "I hate ______!!!" Give us some sort of explanation, go deeper than just a sentence please. Enisy, I hope none of this came out as offense or downright mean, as that wasn't my intent at all. I just wanted to be direct with you, I didn't think I needed to sugarcoat anything since you seem like a very intelligent woman. ______________________________________________________ Anyway as for my response to the topic of this thread...how dare anyone say Spike was the most over-used? Hello! He provided a crazy amount of both plot devices to the story and was a BIG asset to the Scoobies and to Buffy throughout the show. I loved him in Season 4, I like funny Spike. The only season I think he could have utilized more in, was the last season. The most over-used by far is Andrew. He had no right to be in the Scoobies (to this day), it always should have been poor Jonathon. I cried when Andrew killed him, I was so crushed. Even now I am annoyed by him, and if anything that is a character I fully dislike. Another would have to be Connor, that whole Season 4 arc sucked. The show was better when he wasn't a part of it. In my opinion.

He is my favourite thing about season 4; but I understand as any Connor fan does that this opinion is a minority lol.

This thread makes me sad. I didn't know so many people disliked Spike. I don't get it. I would say Harmony. She grates on my nerves. And Eve.

I don't dislike Spike, he definitely had his comedic moments that I liked, however I didn't like the Spuffy relationship, but thats only due to my (slightly obsessive) love for Angel...go Bangel! I will agree that it became alot more tender and mature during Season 7 and he played a massive part in helping Buffy find that inner strength she needed. So who do I think was overused...hmm...Harmony, definitely. I didn't understand why she was so loved...she just irritated me, i'm sorry to say. And Connor, although I think the original chracter design was ok, the way he was written during Season 4 was really bad, but he is not the sole reason why I don't particularly rate that season.

Just a quick reminder, to not stray back off topic too much. Spuffy does have it's own thread. We can talk all about it freely, in there

CowboyGuy, I'll stop bringing it up here, since it offends fellow posters, but you can't seriously expect me to censor what I say in my own LiveJournal. If people aren't comfortable with my opinions, all they have to do is, y'know, not look. It's not String Theory.
And for the record, I like you, and I like your forum; I wouldn't have 500+ posts here if I didn't. It's only this one thing that bothers me (but it just so happens to bother me a lot, since this is my favourite character and 'ship we're talking about, and since the impression people -- like henz, like Aud, like Spike's Slayer -- get from threads like this is so obviously false).
Meh.

Yes it is false which is why I am going out of my way to make sure you weren't offended so much as to shove off from the forum. We need all Spike fans to be here as much as poss. Anyway thanks for having those 500+ posts! *gives karma Sorry about getting miffed about your LJ. I guess it's none of my business anyway. Cheers! (ooh! I'm working on a 'Spuffy' emoticon, I'm sure that you'll like it)

On Buffy, I would say Andrew. Even though he was funny, he didn't belong...
On Angel, I would say Eve. But I think I just didn't care for the actress, to be honest.

Yes, on Angel I think Eve was overused.. they should of just had Lilah or had Illyria in Eve's body... It would have been awsome to have Lilah ! and would have made more sense, although I don't think having Illyria in Eve's body would have been a good choice. I don't think it would have worked IMO.
