I mean, is FOX LOOSING money from Dollhouse? That's the question. Isn't everyone saying it's one of the cheaper shows the network has. i think the point is that no matter how you slice it, Fox (the network) no matter what we want to believe makes their money on ads - not dvr, dvds, online ads, hulu, etc. therefore, live viewing (neilson) is still their bread and butter. and dollhouse pulls in bad ratings and a decreasing demo week after week. they can put a rerun of house, bones, etc. or return to their friday reality shows and get similar or better ratings and demos and thus more $$$. plus, these options are way cheaper. i'd be extremely surprised if Dollhouse is renewed.

If Nielsen's TV ratings are their bread and butter, then Nielsen needs to change how they do things. 12,000 or so TV viewers (that's 0.006%) does not speak for the viewing habits of 200,000,000 TV viewers, no matter how you pretty it up.

Episode 01 - 4.7 million, 2.0 in 18-49 demo. Episode 02 - 4.2 million, 1.7 in 18-49 demo. Episode 03 - 4.1 million, 1.6 in 18-49 demo. Episode 04 - 3.5 million, 1.5 in 18-49 demo. Episode 05 - 4.4 million, 1.6 in 18-49 demo. Episode 06 - 4.1 million, 1.5 in 18-49 demo. Episode 07 - 3.8 million, 1.3 in 18-49 demo. Episode 08 - 3.5 million, 1.4 in 18-49 demo. Episode 09 - 3.6 million, 1.4 in 18-49 demo. Episode 10 - 2.9 million, 1.2 in 18-49 demo. Episode 11 - 3.1 million, 1.1 in 18-49 demo Episode 12 - 2.8 million, 1.0 in 18-49 demo
I still felt like a second season could still be possible with the dreadful ratings the last couple weeks, but after this... no. I'd say the chance is .01%.

NOOOOOOOO! This seriously ruined my weekend, AGAIN. Like all the ratings did for the past month. I can't believe it! Every week I'm let down by the ratings, it's CRAP! Why do I watch TV anymore? All the good shows get canceled while stupid reality shows (*cough* American *cough* Idol) renew years on end. It's bullshit!

In statistics what matters is the size of the sample and not the size of the population. 12,000 is a pretty big sample. Huge if you compare it to the typical sample size in opinion surveys. The real question to ask is whether it's a representative sample, or whether it's skewed in some way. To answer that, you'd need to find out how Nielson picks its families. (For example if they all came from Kansas you wouldn't get a good feel for the nationwide numbers). I don't know enough about the industry to go further. We know DH disproportionately appeals to DVR watchers. The question is whether the skewing skews in a way that means that Nielson is also underestimating how many households are watching DH on TV, in which case Fox would be making a mistake to go by the Nielson numbers; or whether the skewing skews because DH viewers in general just don't watch on TV in which case Fox isn't making a mistake to use the Nielson numbers. Everyone is assuming its the latter case, but there's a world where it could be the former. For example, does the Nielson sample exclude people who watch relatively little TV (5 hours a week or less)? It's possible that people who watch little TV are more likely to spread around their few hours to shows like Dollhouse. If that were so, the Nielson numbers would underestimate the DH audience. Other scenarios could be at work. To really answer the question you would need to know how Nielson picks its families.

Didn't Star Trek come out yesterday though? Could that have contributed to the low ratings this ep got? Not that it even matters anymore.

Dollhouse is now #2 at Amazon under "Box Sets". Isn't that like a lot of money? Do you guys think we have any hope whatsoever anymore?

Didn't Star Trek come out yesterday though? Could that have contributed to the low ratings this ep got? Not that it even matters anymore. While that was certainly a factor, Dollhouse's ratings are really just a product of its time slot. The show isn't getting good ratings because it is on Fridays. Not just because of a new movie or something else. Another reason could also be that since the first few episodes weren't fantastic, a lot may have dropped the show from their viewing list. At this point all we can hope for is that FOX really takes the DVR numbers into account. It has been proven many times that around 75% of people with DVR and TiVo STILL watch the ads and don't fast forward them. So there is still a lot of business to be made with DVR ratings.

Dollhouse is now #2 at Amazon under "Box Sets". Isn't that like a lot of money? Do you guys think we have any hope whatsoever anymore? It's a lot of money for 20th Century Fox studio, which produces the show and licenses the DVD's. Normally the broadcast network doesn't see any money from DVD sales of shows that are produced out-of-house, so it has very little influence on whether the show would get renewed or not. Eliza's development deal was jointly with 20th Century Fox and Fox Broadcasting, however, so it's possible in this case that Fox TV does get a cut of the DVD profits. I don't know.
