I thought the very first sentence in this issue was interesting... Made me think more about Emmie's theory on the real love story going on here... and I wouldn't put it past Joss to blatantly hint like that. This whole Xander interest could be but a mere distraction. If anything this season has shown, it's how much our two leading females really love each other... i agree with you...i definitely have a new interpretation of Willow and Buffy's relationship ever since i've read Emmie's theory...and i don't oppose that pairing. But do we really think Joss would have the balls to start an actual relationship with Willow and Buffy and completely stir up the fan base into a possible hysterical uproar?.........haha....actually, yeah I can see him do that. If he can make Angel
into Twilight, he's capable of having Willow and Buffy in a relationship. With Joss, expect the unexpected.
events throughout Buffy that i'm sure no one expected until it happened: Angel to Angelus (s2) Jenny's death (2) Dawn (s5) Tara's death (s6) Twilight's identity (s8) i'm sure there's more examples but i'm tired and cant think....the point is, is that Joss does unexpected things and he puts a lot of trust in the fans to still continue along with it and i've seen (well, read) a lot of disappointment and anger of what fans have to say about his turn of events. I like unexpectedness, if he wrote cliched story lines with cliched characters, I wouldn't be an obsessed follower of the show/comic. His storytelling is definitely becoming more grandeur, but I like it. I now wouldn't be all too surprised if Willow and Buffy become a couple, nor will I be surprised if it ended up just as subtext. All we can do is wait and speculate about it until we have the comic in our hands and see which way Joss decides to take us next. If people don't like it, it sucks for them but I'm totally psyched about it! And I so loved this issue! My favorite panel is when Willow was trying to rope the Goddesses leg with mystical rope. I thought Willow looked completely badass in that scene. And everyone's dialogue throughout the issue was perfect! This is definitely one of my favorite issues.

There's a long way to go before we get a Buffy/Willow pairing. One of them the fallout from this season. What if what happens this season causes a huge split between Buffy and Willow? Buffy taking a side that shocks and angers Willow..causing a big rift.
Remember the Demon's comment to Buffy in Anywhere But Here...ending magic is Buffy's life goal. The panel immediately goes to Willow after that comment is made and she looked cold, weary and sad. If Buffy takes the opposite side on this issue of magic...yeah..that would be the biggest obstacle between them. If ending magic is Buffy's ultimate goal...Willow's entire life is magic. Her life would be over. A big roadblock indeed.

The following is pure speculation on my part...but it's based on Xander's comment in issue #31. Warning. Very spoilery. Xander's remark in issue #31 made me think and I think I've found some unbelievable coincidences. He says "it's a nuke". His remark made me look at the early issue when Buffy and Willow captured General Voll. What did he say? He said he wanted to nuke the Slayers. Coincidence? No. I don't think so. I believe this is what CAUSES the event that wipes out the Slayer line and magic. A thermonuclear explosion set off killing them all. This is Twilight's plan! Some more clues...Twilight's mask. What does it look like?! It has the shape of a bomb. The strange symbol on his breastplate - the half crescent, right? It's what you get when the nuclear bomb goes off - a mushroom cloud. No wonder Buffy couldn't find information on her past in that 200 year future...it was totally wiped out by Twilight's event...the thermonuclear blast killing the entire Slayer line.
One last hint...there was a Burt Lancaster movie a long time ago about a terrorist taking control of a nuclear silo. The name of the film? "Twilight's Last Gleaming"
I'm surprised no one commented on your theory, but I do believe that it is a damn good one.

Interesting how the fallen/hurt soldier asked Buffy if she was "in love." She doesn't answer; why? She looks very sad, though. I got the impression that he was both making an observation about the woman that he missed in his own life, and semi-foreshadowing Buffy's relationship with Xander since the next conversation Buffy has is with Xander and the do-you-still-love-me talk. I'm new to S8, so I had a lot of catching up to do... I think my favorite part of this issue was Twilight's speech as he referred to Giles, Faith and Andrew as they lay in a heap on his floor. Referring to Giles as Buffy's trust, and Faith as her guilt seems to me like he's scraping for old feelings and old wounds. I don't know what it means yet, but I really loved the way that was laid out.

Dorothyfan: "Twilight's last gleaming" is just from the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner. That's where the Burt Lancaster movie got its title. The song obviously refers to the Battle of Fort McHenry in 1814. Kind of a stretch. IMO, I think we're dealing with portal-opening here, rather than nukes.

As a non-American, I find that both informational, and hilarious at the same time. *karmas*

What's interesting is that one of the theories for S8's finale is that Dawn's keyness somehow comes into play for Twilight's end-of-magic bout and Willow's spiral-down to Future Dark Willow. Dawn's key energy is bright green. If this theory is true, the lyrics "O! say can you see by the dawn's early light/What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?" eerily fit this situation.
