Doctor Who rip-offs the Whedonverse more times than I'd care to mention. Even the set designs on 'Bad Wolf' - featuring the uber-Rose - apes Adam's lab in the Initiative.

Season five, by a long way. Some interesting themes, Lorne and Gunn actually have something to do, the Fred / Illyria storyline is probably the best thing they ever did and Charisma Carpenter suddenly learned to act whilst she was in that coma. I adore Harmony, too.
Also, David Boreanaz is way hot in season five.

I voted season 4. I don't like Riley's character, he just doesn't fit with the "Buffy spirit". I think that was the point, though. That he was - aside from the demon fighting mojo - 'normal', the boy next door. Within a group of 1000 year old high school graduates, super powered cheerleaders, a couple of lesbian witches and a crusty old English bloke, Riley was the outsider. Then again, I have a huge boner for season four, so I'm probably biased. My vote goes to season two. Controversial! I realise it's very popular with the fans, but there are some utterly atrocious episodes, and the main arc never quite gels for me. Why does Angelus want to destroy the world? 'Shits and giggles' doesn't cut it, for me. I like 'Becoming', some of the stuff with Dru as a parallel to Buffy is very interesting, but the Angel/Angelus bit is just poorly-written melodrama... Please don't curse me. MB x

Cordelia! Put your boobs away! Cripes. No wonder Willow looks so startled.
I'm not a big fan of this image; it looks very much like they've taken a mixture of screenshots and publicity photos as their basis for the characters, which never works; it looks like those awful cast pictures from season seven where no two people seemed to be in the same room when the picture was taken.

Along the way, Buffy and the legion of Slayers join forces with the irresistible Dracula to defeat a tight-nit group of nefarious vampires, in which the Slayers suffer a massive hit. Why is no one talking about this 'massive hit'? The shit is going to hit the proverbials if Satsu takes a blow! MB x

Gah! A curse on them releasing the artwork so far in advance...
It always feels like about ten thousand years have passed between us seeing the covers and reading the comics.

The arc which spans issues 21-30 seems too long, IMO. I hope they break it up. From my understanding, It's not an arc, it's a string of stand-alones which tie into/advance the main story; each writer has chosen his or her favourite character, if I remember correctly. MB x

In the issue 12 preview, it shows Willow has been taken. So in the third part, shes already been rescued? Cause she's on the cover and obviously with Buffy and Xander. Well spotted! I hadn't thought of that. Presumably that's their reason for being in Tokyo... MB x

Don't get me wrong, I'm still enthusiastic, but what if all is not what it seems? What if Satsu was *distracting* Buffy from the coming invasion? What if the kiss, the sex, the lip gloss... What if it was all a trick? I'm not saying it's likely, I'm just starting to suspect... What if? Joss would be putting his balls on the chopping board. After the reaction Tara's death and what it did to Willow got from the fans, I'm very surprised to see him going where he's going with Buffy. Maybe you didn't understand what I said. I said SO FAR, right now, she's been the best for her since Angel. She hasn't done anything wrong yet. YET. That's because she hasn't done anything yet. She's a pair of sapphire eyes and flowing locks of turquoise away from being a Mary Sue. A Mary Satsu! MB x

It seems like you're erasing all of Satsu's pro's just because she's female. Things We Know About Satsu:- Slayer. - Fancies Buffy. - Wears Cinnamon lipgloss. - Has subjectively better hair now than she has had in the recent past. For or against, there's not a lot to list. MB x

I really don't get the attitude you have towards me. Did I do something in the past that pissed you off or something? You're always rude to me on here. The relentless defense of Joss/Willow/Buffy/whoever's on your list that week doesn't help. I disagree with a lot of what you say, but it's your attitude that irritates me. You rarely back up your arguments; instead, you're condescending and hostile towards those who disagree with you. MB x

Buffy isn't acting like Parker. She's taking care of Satsu, she asked her to stay. What comic were you reading? MB x

There is a division in the community though. There are people who are disgusted at what happened, and people who are fine with it. Disgusted is an incredibly strong word to use; there's implied accusations of homophobia in a word like disgusted. Coming at it as pure story, I'd say disappointed summed up the sentiments of the majority of fans. Disappointed that Buffy is acting like such a Parker, after all she's been through, and considering the position she's in. Buffy and Satsu are adults. They can do whatever they want together, they don't need your approval or anybody else's. And neither does Joss. If you are uncomfortable with this latest issue...it's not his fault. It's yours. Sorry, but it's true. All I can say is I hope you keep reading and see where Joss goes with this, because he's a freakin' genisu. And this! This! The relentless defense of Joss Whedon because 'he's a genius'! It's almost as bad as the people who take it personally if Joss kills one of their favourite characters, or puts them through something that they don't come out of shiny. Joss is not a genius; he's a guy that created a show. A brilliant show, yes, but that wasn't the work of one man; without Jane Espenson, without Marti Noxon, without Doug Petrie or Drew Goddard or Greenburg or any number of brilliant scriptwriters and directors, Buffy would never have been the show it became. And it's not all brilliant. I've seen this 'if you don't like it you're not reading it right' sentiment bandied about on these boards - in this fandom - too often. Art is about discussion; this is a discussion forum. If everyone was posting about how awesome Joss is and nothing else, it would become old fast. MB x

Yet Buffy for some reason changed her mind and USED Satsu. Which i think is wrong too. I think Buffy 'using' Satsu follows the theme of Buffy's moral ambiguity that has been established this season; I'm still not convinced that Buffy would sleep with a woman - it took her a long time to come to terms with Willow and Tara's relationship, after all - and I don't buy this 'spectrum of sexuality' baloney that's being bandied about, but the idea that she was stuck up in her great back castle and missing that sex (and, also in keeping with this season's themes, enjoying/abusing her power over the newly-activated Slayers) rings fairly true. I'm willing to see where the rest of the season will take this; I hope it's going somewhere. I'm just really uncomfortable with the way that her sexuality has been exploited as a marketing tactic, and I'm not all that enamored with the way Joss has been conducting himself in his interviews. Gee whiz, I suggest that a woman who had sex with another woman might not be heterosexual, I'm such a radical! I never suggested you were being radical; I think that's what you'd like to think. Merely that I think you over egg the bread when it comes to gay issues in the Buffyverse; if everything was reduced to sexuality, this story would be boring. You've been banging on about bisexuality and labels and alsorts of nonsense in any number of threads, and it's starting to get repetitive... Also, please note that I realise the irony of my accusing people of being repetitive, given my current post count and it's reliance on 'Buffy/Satsu is STOOPID!' sentiments. When anything like this occurs, I think people get caught up with bandying about complex notions like bigotry and close mindedness, and it runs the risk of dividing the community. MB x

Wow, look at the poll. Unless somebody did some cheating, we're RIGHT down the middle. Which I'm kind of surprised about. I got the feeling more fans were open minded. See, this is the thing that I was most worried about. As soon as Joss suggests that anyone who doesn't agree with Buffy/Satsu is close-minded, the fans who will follow him blindly wherever he goes and allow him to dictate the way they read his work start throwing around veiled accusations of bigotry. And, no, Mikey isn't the first one to say this sort of thing, but his posts have been so relentlessly giddy with labelling Buffy bisexual and defending everything Joss does, his was the post I decided to pick up on. As I believe is the over-arcing theme of this series, not everything can be seen in black and white; by the same reasoning, not everyone who considers Joss's intent to stoke a bit of controversy with a ham-fisted 'lesbian/bisexual/She's just experimenting!!!' triste is a mouth-breathing anti-liberal. After the comments Joss made blowing his own trumpet about not using a bit of girl-on-girl to boost the ratings during the Willow/Tara backlash - comments that I could stand by, because I believed in them - I find it extremely disappointing the way this particularly storyline has, seemingly, been used to court controversy from the get-go. It's not the story that I have a problem with - I still don't buy it, but I'd be willing to see what comes out of it and consider otherwise - but the fact that they were explicitly encouraging retailers to buy this issue in bulk and that the New York Times article was published on the day of release leads me to believe that they're using a 'lesbian chic' moment to drum up a bit of pointless controversy and sell a few comics...
I expected better than that from the Buffyverse.

Heres what Joss had to say on Buffy's 'experiment' with Satsu: "Before fans start blogging frantically, they should know that i'm clear where this is headed. We’re not going to make her gay, nor are we going to take the next 50 issues explaining that she’s not. She’s young and experimenting, and did I mention open-minded?” The underlying sentiment being 'if you don't agree that Buffy/Satsu was a brilliant decision, you're narrow-minded and LAME'. Too often these days I've seen Joss telling us how to read his work; with a fandom as devoted as his is, I'm inclined to wonder whether it hasn't all gone to his head. Also, he seems to be outright admitting that they're going to plonk a sex scene in the middle of the season and then only skirt around the issues it might bring up in whatever follows. Which, for me, reads 'selling point'. For me, one of the coolest things about Willow and Tara's relationship was that it was built up so steadily and naturally, that they slipped their first kissed into 'The Body', that it wasn't all fanfare and scandal. But this? They've been urging retailers for months now to stock extra copies of issue twelve because it would sell out so quickly. Selling Buffy on the back of a sensationalised 'lesbian moment' goes against everything that was brilliant about Willow and Tara's relationship. Remember when Whedon was saying things like this? 'Ultimately, some people say "lesbian chic," I say, "Okay, whatever." Those criticisms don't really bug me. You look at shows like Ally McBeal and Party Of Five, which both did lesbian kisses that were promoted and hyped for months and months, and afterwards the characters were like, "Well, I seem to be very heterosexual! Thank you for that steamy lesbian kiss!"'? Yuh... huh. So, yes. Lesbian chic. And I don't want it in the Buffyverse. I want to be all snarky and flippant about this, but I'm genuinely irked by it. For one, because - all cynicism aside - I love this character, I love her story, and I love how true and real and brilliantly she's written in the show, and where she's going in the comics. To see her reduced to a quick fuck and a selling point makes me angry. But - bigger picture - wasn't this supposed to be a feminist show? MB x

Caleb just seemed to come out of nowhere, and he went away just as fast. Wasn't Firefly taken off the air around the same time that season seven of Buffy was in production? I'd always assumed that's why Joss brought Nathan Fillion onto Buffy and Gina Torres onto season four of Angel; that it was real world issues that kind of fudged the story towards the end of both seasons. I've been wrong before, though. I agree that Caleb was never really all that convincing as a villain. Like so much of the fuzzy mythology introduced towards the end of the last series - Caleb's relationship with The First, the scythe, the pagan in the bad wig that has lived underneath a continent that was only discovered relatively recently for, like, thousands of years - it all just seems very half-assed and confused. The whole religious slant seemed like a bit of a sledgehammer, too. MB x

He has NEVER been misogynistic. I don't know. He did have some non-too-progressive issues with Buffy being stronger than him. There is a panel of Buffy with a HUGE forehead!!! It makes me cringe to actually look at it Agreed. I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but I honestly don't know what people are seeing in Jeanty. Occasionally he nails it, but most of the time his people have melon heads, giant foreheads, and it looks like their faces are melting. Vi comes off worst in that picture of her and Rhona. Eep! That said, the image of the girls getting down with their bad selves all over Giant Dawn really needs to be made into a poster. Or a billboard. MB x
