Sigh. I wonder if it will help that I know in advance I'm really, really not going to like this issue.
Probably not.

We're all bracing ourselves. I'd be shocked if I end up remotely happy with the outcome of this. But for all we know, this could turn out to be the best Buffy story yet! I'm keeping my candle lit, hehe.

I'm into the Twilight arc and looking forward to the next issue. I love Jane Espenson and her work on the show, but I'm not overly excited about her writing in the comics. I don't want to diss her, she's too sweet and usually terrific, but Retreat was messy.
In all fairness, I don't think I would of cared for the Harmony issue no matter who wrote it because I didn't enjoy the content of the story with the reailty show and the strange outting of vamps. And I'm not a big Reily fan, so the standalone isn't something I'm dying to read. I will read it of course, I can't skip anything.

Some giant-sized spoilers HERE. Mostly about some fan favorites, so this may not go down so well with some people. ETA: Please note that the speaker isn't Allie, though I'm pretty sure that anything shared about Allie's on-going projects had to be sanctioned by him.

Are these the spoilers you're referring to? Turning to—spoiler alert!—the revelation that Angel is Twilight in Buffy season 8, Atkins promised that there's a lot more story to tell following that development. "If you're an Angel/Buffy fan, there's a big payoff," Atkins says.
"For those of you who are Spike fans, you might be a little disappointed by the end of the last issue," Atkins says. "But you'll blush either way." No surprises there for me, really. I'm sure Joss will make this plausible as far as cause-and-effect are concerned, but as far as making it morally acceptable... I'm afraid he and I don't seem to share the same outlook.

Yeah, those be them. More specifically, the final bit.

Obviously, this Atkins fellow doesn't have the intimate feel for the fandom that Scott has. I don't think Scott would have given that particular bit away... if all the Spuffies are going to be infuriated, let them be infuriated by the story itself, not by spoilers with nearly a year left to go in the season.
If the Twilight debacle should have taught them anything, it's that giving the fans several extra months to stew and speculate about future controversial story developments is not a helpful thing. But it did boost the comic's sales, and that's probably what PR Guy Atkins is most concerned with. Problem is, I'm sure a lot of Spuffies will drop the book now. More news from the con:

It would be nice to have Jeanty back on board. I've generally enjoyed his work on the series so far. And hey, if that is so, we can probably continue to have our Q&As with him. Anyway, thought I'd add this new little detail from CBR's coverage of the Dark Horse panel at WonderCon 2010: Taken in the context that this guy may not be the most familiar with the series, I'd say that it essentially nullifies the contradiction of Scott's response that Spike/Spuffy fans will feel like their ship was disrespected. The earlier report from Newsarama suggested that Spike fans may be disappointed by the end of the season, or at least, it could be construed that way, which ran antithetical to Scott's previous statement that there was hope that the Buffy/Spike dynamic would be dealt with respectfully. Since the Newsarama report was a live one, it's possible that certain key details were omitted either for brevity, or by mistake. You can read CBR's full coverage HERE.

I kind of wish they would just keep quiet and let the issue speak for itself. Everything I've heard has made me even less thrilled about reading it.
Yes, I'm glad that Buffy saw fit to delay throwing herself at Twangel for almost five minutes out of respect for her butchered sisters. Guess that's the most we can expect. Buffy and Angel, how romantic, squeeee. There. That's my duty done.

That's the reason Scott stopped doing the Q&As. I can see now that his timing in that decision wasn't just off-the-cuff. If I were him, I certainly wouldn't want to be doing a Q&A for #34.

Probably wise to stop for now, and as he (and now you) said, allow the story to speak for itself. This is the arc that according to him would probably have benefited the most from being a weekly event, like the TV show... less time for stewing, I guess.

This is the arc that according to him would probably have benefited the most from being a weekly event, like the TV show... less time for stewing, I guess. I think it's a real problem. And depending on how much closure we get to the current storyline by #36, we're going to have one-third of a year to stew before getting any more of the main story. As much as I (usually) love having my monthly Buffy fix, I'm very glad they've decided to tighten up and shorten the story for season 9 (assuming I'll be inclined to read it).

It seems blatantly obvious that Scott just doesn't feel like he can add anything, since #33 (and almost assuredly #34) became a series of shipper questions. How does he respond to that?

Certainly not in a way that won't burn a part of the fandom, many of whom are still burnt by the unfortunate cover slip-up that lead to the revealing of Twilight's identity. I still have high hopes for this story, though.

Well, the good folks at Buffyfest talked to Scott Allie, and cleared up a couple of things. Check it out HERE. Basically, as I mentioned elsewhere, the S9 announcement is pretty stale news; Scott's mentioned/confirmed it several times in our Q&As now, as well as the most recent official word on the matter at ECCC 2010. However, contrary to the statements made by that other guy, Scott says that

Well, here's part 1 and 2 of the TFAW.com interview with Georges: And here are the videos from the "Buffy Season 8: Looking Back" panel: Just finished watching all the videos (yeah, took a little personal time at work), and some very cool stuff in there. Highlights (for me): 1. SlayAlive got a shout out! Emmie too! 2. We'll learn more about the "force" that helped drive the cosmic sex. Basically the force that threw in the glow whammy. 3. Sounds like more Giles and Faith in S9. 4. If you haven't already heard... both Angel and Spike didn't time travel. Sounds like we're going to have to read the IDW books to understand what happened to them. Well, no surprise, and honestly, no news there. 5. Apparently there are some theories out there re: the Seed of Wonder being laid by Buffy as the result of the space frakkin. Really? Well, that's been debunked. Thank Hera. 6. Re: Buffy's superpowers: Allie said "Things will continue to evolve and change", and Jeanty said " her powers are the result of what's going on, so all of this will come to a resolution, so you can assume that her powers will come to a resolution as well". 7. They are NOT going to retcon the Fray universe! Allie said: "not going to cancel out Fray... that world is still our future". 8. There'll be more conversation between Buffy and Spike in the near future. I think specifically #37. 9. Giles and Faith will have a great moment in Spike's ship, possibly also in #37. And Giles will apparently have a few chances to shine in the upcoming issues. 10. A bunch of Dollhouse comics out in Spring 2011.

Interesting that in one of the final clips up there, Scott says the conclusion of season 8 will "make Kennedy haters happy, but not what you think."
Which suggests that she won't die, but she and Willow will break up... or she'll be part of a Slayer revolt against Buffy... or...
Tara will come back.

I remember Scott saying that, but I don't remember the tone in which he said it. At the time of viewing, I thought he was just kidding. Do you remember which clip it was?

I missed the shout-out completely, but that's cool! Go SlayAlive!
This was so much fun to watch. We're lucky someone recorded the panel and shared it. Woohoo!
