Wow.
Either they're massively over-selling #39, or we can just take our worst-case scenarios for what happens and assume it will be much worse than that.
It has to be something more than just a major character death or two, I think. Something on the order of "Giles has always secretly been Buffy's and the Scoobies' enemy, ever since season 1, and now he betrays them and Xander and Dawn die as a result."
It has to be something as mind-blowing as that to live up to the hype.
This interview was also the first I've heard that my friend Darick Robertson will be drawing a Guild one-shot. Awesome.

Kinda cool to learn stuff about your friends that way, eh? I don't know if they're majorly overselling #39, but I do think that there'll be some fundamental changes going on. S8, in general has always been about changing things on a fundamental level. We switched mediums, we started off with a new status quo, no more Sunnydale, and we're somehow being brought closer to how that status quo changes again to reflect the situation in Fray's time. Xander is now with Dawn, talking about a possible future together. Willow has probably attained some kinda immortality, and Buffy and Angel are seemingly indestructible beings. And they created a new reality. The Slayer/vampire mythos has now been further expanded upon... Lots of fundamental things have changed. And will probably continue to. That betrayal is probably going to be the biggest gamechanger of the season; Batsu and Twangel probably won't even be a blip after #39.

I can't shake the feeling that I'm going to get to the end of season 8, and say to myself "Damn... I wish I hadn't read that."
Even the past seasons that ended in tragedy (2 and 5, and 7 to some extent) didn't make me feel that way. But the way they've been selling it, this season is going to end in total, unmitigated misery.
Merrrrry Christmas.
Maybe I'll try and get Georges to give his impressions on the matter.
(As for Batsu, I'm hoping it will start blipping again in season 9...)

The Giles thing would be stretching the story a little too far, I think, especially coming so soon after the whole Boyd thing in Dollhouse. I'm sure Joss could find a way to do it right, or better this time around, but I doubt he wants to do such a massive retcon of yet another father figure. I do concur that if the hype is genuine we might see something very game changing and "devasta[ting]" for these characters. The final Jo cover really seems to speak volumes and it worries me that Allie asked whether it was "awful enough/should it be more awful?"

Maybe Scott was thinking they should have gone with the cover where a laughing Xander gleefully chainsaws off Buffy's arms and legs.
It's hard to imagine a scenario that would a) live up to the hype, and b) not make me sorry I ever showed up in the first place.
If I wanted to see a world where good people get nothing but misery in return for their goodness, I'd go outside.

I would love to think we are being played, but they all seem so sincere about their reactions to #39. Could you imagine if we are? Piltdown Man level of conning. What could be soooo horrible, to the level of devastation they are talking about? GROWN men are being made to cry. Buffy's died before, Spike has died before, Angel has died before, Anya, Tara, Joyce, these deaths were very sad, so what could happen that would be any worse than any of those? What could be THAT epic as to make everything before not nearly as tragic?

What could be THAT epic as to make everything before not nearly as tragic? Betrayal. Not betrayal with extenuating circumstances, like Angel being Twilight... but just flat-out betrayal. Resulting in a death or two. Something that can never be made right again. At first I thought it might have something to do with one of the major 'ships getting definitively sunk... Bangel or Spuffy getting destroyed beyond any hope... but while that might get a reaction from a certain segment of the fans, I don't think Scott or Sierra or Georges would have such reactions to that. I think there are only three people the betrayer can be at this point: 1. Xander 2. Dawn 3. Buffy herself All the other main characters have betrayed Buffy's trust, or flat-out been her enemy, at some point in the past, so they wouldn't qualify as "the most unexpected." And all three of them might qualify for the "closest" title. I have this vision of Buffy letting her emotions get the best of her, and making the wrong decision regarding the Seed. This results in the destruction of our world, with only a few people... most (but not all) of the Scoobies, and some of the surviving Slayer Army, escaping into Buffy and Angel's new universe. But, I'm always wrong.

I would like for there to be something that major happening in #39. But, honestly, I'm not going to expect anything too crazy. I personally think it's all hype, and by feeding into it, we might be disappointed in the outcome.
